Social Sciences Online and Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories These websites have updates and resources for social sciences. Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories is a new space with the ANZH content and supporting information and resources. AVAILABLE: Updated regularly, https://aotearoahistories.education.govt.nz/resources
The Aotearoa History Show season two The Ministry of Education is supporting season two of this RNZ podcast. Fourteen new episodes of the video series and podcasts will be available, as well as short animations for younger audiences. The Ministry of Education will provide accompanying teacher guidance for the series. Available: From Term 2, 2022
Connected – Culture and Histories, years 4–8 The Connected series has provided rich student texts and teacher guidance with a STEM focus. Now it has an Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories and culture focus and will be available in te reo Māori and English language versions. (Also linked to Te Marautanga o Aotearoa) Available: Term 2, 2022
Units of inquiry for Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories, years 1–10 These units centre on national contexts students can learn through, and about. Each unit supports teachers with their knowledge of the context and with providing rich learning opportunities for their students. Available: Term 2, 2022
Something Happened Here, years 4–10 Students (and teachers!) embark on scaffolded investigations into the histories behind locations – uncovering the stories, building their understandings, and practising critical inquiry. School Journal histories collections teacher support materials These teacher support materials showcase existing histories-related texts from the School Journal series. The materials offer examples of how to use these texts to support rich learning opportunities in Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories. Tūhura | Aotearoa Explorers, years 1–10 Tūhura provides four levelled collections of historical prompts at years 1–3, 4–6, 7–8 and 9–10. Each collection provides a template for students to explore the histories around the objects, along with teacher guidance on how to shape and adapt the resources for their inquiry. Leading Local Curriculum Guide One This curriculum guide supports school leaders to understand and plan for Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories in social sciences. Nelly in Aotearoa, years 1–3 In these animated videos, students will meet Nelly – a young godwit visiting Aotearoa for the first time. The themed videos support foundational learning for Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories in social studies. They have accompanying teacher support materials. Available: Term 1, 2022
Leading Local Curriculum Guide Two This curriculum guide builds on the first guide. It supports school leaders to move into thinking in more detail about the implementation of ANZH within social sciences. Available: March 2022, https://aotearoahistories.education.govt.nz/resources
School Journal and other series – reviews and teacher guidance Histories-related texts from School Journal, School Journal Story Library, Connected, and Junior Journal, are being reviewed by a small group of historians. These reviews, including guidance for teachers, will be published online. Available: Term 3, 2022
ANZH in Action series In these videos you can watch teachers trialling parts of Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories in their classrooms. They demonstrate a range of teaching strategies and learning activities to bring the histories to life. There are also sets of complementary planning guides, including a template for your own planning. Available: Teaching Resources | Aotearoa NZ’s Histories (education.govt.nz)

Te Ara o Te Kīngitanga | The Search for a King, years 7–10 These engaging and exciting books tell the stories of the establishment of the Kīngitanga movement. The four student books and teacher support materials will be available in te reo Māori and English language versions. (Also linked to Te Marautanga o Aotearoa) Available: August 2022
Histories books for school libraries In May and June 2021, schools and kura were invited to order up to $200 of high-quality Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories books for their libraries. Available: Deliveries completed by end of July 2021
