NEW YEAR'S EVE
The 31st of December is the last day of the year. In many countries, including the United Kingdom, New Year's Eve is celebrated at evening parties, where many people dance, eat, drink, and watch fireworks. The celebrations usually go on long time after midnight into New Year's Day, 1 January. In the UK for the Scots this festival is the most important one of the year, even more than Christmas, with many special traditions and foods that are only eaten at this time. Do you have a special New Year Fesival in your country? Is it on the same day?
APRIL FOOL'S DAY April Fool's Day an annual custom that happens on the 1st of April. People play jokes and tricks on each other. The people playing the jokes let the other person know by shouting "April Fool!" at them. In the UK jokes can only be played until midday. After that time anyone playing a trick is the April Fool. Do you have a similar festival in your country?
HALLOWEEN
Halloween is a celebration in many countries on 31 October, the eve of the Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the time of the year for remembering the dead.Things to do at Halloween include trick-or-treating (sometimes called guising and souling), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, telling the future , telling scary stories, as well as watching horror films. In your country do you have a festival to remember ancestors or people who have died?
GUY FAWKES NIGHT
Guy Fawkes Night happens every year on the 5th of November in the United Kingdom. Its history begins on 5 November 1605 when Guy Fawkes, was arrested with the gunpowder he had put underneath the Houses of Parliament. In celebration people lit bonfires all over the country and this became an event that happened every year. Today Guy Fawkes Night is usually celebrated at large organised events, with a bonfire and huge firework displays. Are there any festivals in your country that are about something that happened in history?
CHRISTMAS DAY
Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, on December 25. As a religious and cultural celebration Christmas Day is a public holiday in the United Kingdom. The day is celebrated by the giving of gifts, the eating of special foods ( including roast turkey and Christmas Pudding) and by the singing of special Christmas religious songs called carols.
