Four days before the liberation of Kalisz, the Germans shot 56 activists of the Polish underground there. Among them were factory owners and property owners who felt Poles despite their German roots. The conspirators were arrested, tried and sentenced in a show trial. - What upset the Germans very much was the participation in the Polish underground organization of citizens who had previously signed the volkslist. - They were citizens of German origin, the elite of Kalisz and the surrounding communes, among them was Alfred Nowacki, the owner of the factory we know today as Winiary.
