  • Earth's air supports life.
  • It protects the planet from small meteors, harmful energy from space.
  • Air is part of the atmosphere.
  • The ATMOSPHERE is the layer of gases and water vapor around Earth.
  • Two main gases in the atmosphere are nitrogen and oxygen.
  • Plants and animals depend on each other to use the gases in the air.

How is air useful?

  • Wind in the atmosphere is a kind of energy. It can turn the blades of a windmill. The blade's motion makes machine work. That machine makes electricity. Wind can also help people have fun. It can move kites and sailboats.

Uses of wind

  • Earth's atmosphere also keeps Earth from getting too hot or cold. Plants use nitrogen to make nutrients. Animals eat plants. When they produce waste or die, nitrogen goes back to the soil and air.
  • Part of Earth's atmosphere is called the ozone layer. It keeps most of the Sun's harmful rays from reaching Earth's suface.

Earth's atmosphere

  • Most of the water on Earth is salt water.
  • Salt water plays an important role in what we eat. It contains minerals and carbon dioxide.
  • Scientist have found ways to turn salt water into fresh water. This is called DESALINATION.
  • When rain or snow falls, some water soaks into the ground. It fills up the spaces in the rocks and soil. Some people dig holes below the ground to get freshwater. These holes are called wells.

How is water useful?

  • Resources are things people use to live. Some resources can be replaced by nature. These are called RENEWABLE RESOOURCES.
  • Other resources such as copper, coal, oil, natural gas, and other minerals cannot be replaced. Once used, they are gone. These are called NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES.

Land Resources

  • Oil and natural gas are fossil fuels. They form from the plants and animals that used to live in the ocean. Oil and natural gas are called petroleum products. Petroleum products make cars, trains, boats, and airplanes run.

oil and natural gas

  • Fuels are resources people use for energy. Coal, oil, and natural gas are called fossil fuels. Once these fuels are burned, they are gone. Fossils fuels are nonrenewable resources because they take millions of years to form.

How do fuels form?

  • People do things every day that affect, or change, the environment. A harmful change to the natural environment is called POLLUTION.
  • People cut down too many trees to build new roads, buildings, or malls.
  • Sometimes oil leaks from a ship into the ocean. This makes it hard for animals to move and eat.
  • Washing clothes and bathing can put harmful substances in the water.
  • People burn fuels to run factories, and drive cars. Air pollution over cities is called SMOG. Smog makes it hard for people to breath.
  • People throw or burned garbage, making a lot of smoke. Some garbage is poisonus. It may have dangerous chemicals.

How do people affect the environment?

Make an infographic about water, air, or land resources, ways that people use and affect.
