CHARACTERISTICS
Early Classical
In Early Classical Greek Sculpture, sculptors concentrated on making figures that were moving through space. The best examples of Early Classical architectural sculpture are the works of the Olympia Master, an unidentified artist who decorated the pediments and frieze of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. The artist observed differences of age in the human bodies and differences of expression. The freestanding sculpture was usually made of bronze. Myron highlighted, with his most famous work the Discobolos ("Disc Launcher")
In High Classical Greek Sculpture Polyclitus gave importance to proportion in his Doryphoros, called "The Canon" due to its "correct" proportions of an ideal male form. They applied this canon of proportions to their figures. The classical canon is a model that establishes the perfect proportions of human beauty. Proportions were considered perfect if the height of the human was exactly seven times the height of the head. The human body was made in an "ideal" form. High Classical sculptors developed the contrapposto stance, in which the subject's body weight is hold onto a single foot, leaving the other bent.

Late Classical
In Late Classical Greek Sculpture, figures came to be seen as three-dimensional forms, which occupied and enclosed space. They could be viewed from any angle. This late stage of classicism also produced the first free-standing female nudes. Praxiteles, demonstrated a total mastery of the technique of realism in a series of figures that, for the first time in Greek sculpture, showed sensual possibilities. His Aphrodite of Cnidus, was totally naked, a novelty in Greek art, and her beauty it was famous in ancient times.
are you ready to know the most famous sculptors?
Leochares worked on the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus with Scopas. The mausoleum was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Skopas, was a Greek architect and sculptor. He was among the first to introduce powerful emotional expressions on the faces of his marble figures.
Lysippus was one of the greatest sculptors of the Late Classic Period. He was an official sculptor of Alexander the Great.
Sculptors
Polykleitos was a Greek sculptor of the High Classic period. He created bronze sculptures.
Myron was one of the best sculptors of Early Classical Greek Sculpture. He was famous for his sculptures of powerful athletes and real animals.
Praxiteles, was one of the most famous and greatest sculptors. One of his main concerns as an artist was to introduce as much realism as possible into his work.
Most famous sculptures
The original Doriphore was sculpted by Polykleitos. This sculpture was made of bronze and represented a muscular young man carrying a spear. The sculptor shows the body in perfect proportions.
Doriphore
Myron's Discobolus was a bronze sculpture. The Discobolus reflected the exact moment in which an athlete is in maximum tension and throwing a disc. It was the most famous sculpture of Myron.
Discobolus
I liked do this work because I have learned more about Greek sculpture. For example, the Greeks had a lot in mind for human beauty and that they followed an exact proportion for their sculptures. In summary, it could be said that Greek sculpture is based on the realism and idealism of the human figure, and on mobility; and they were normally naked. We have also learned about the most important sculptures, such as Myron, the most famous sculptures and the different stages of the period. I hope you have learned as much as I did and that you enjoyed it.
