Full Professor in Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology at the University of Bologna. He is the Italian Representative for Bioeconomy in Horizon 2020, BBI JU, BLUEMED initiative, and EU Bioeconomy Policy Forum.

Senior Research Fellow at NREL and an Affiliate Faculty member in Chemistry at CSU. He leads an interdisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, and engineers on conversion of biomass to chemicals and materials and plastics upcycling.

Chair Professor in Environmental Biotechnology at Delft University of Technology. Scientific interests are mainly related to biofilm processes, nutrient conversion processes and the role of storage polymers in microbial ecology.
