Seaside

Liepaja seaside (Liepājas jūrmala) has been a popular destination for people, who want to resort since 1860s when the place was visited by Russian and European aristocrats, even by Russia’s Tsar himself. Nowadays, Liepaja seaside is still a popular place for vacationers. It is the perfect place for outdoor activities, such as running, Nordic walking, cycling and other types of exercise. One of the speciality of the seaside is the beach, which is 50-80 metres wide and 8 kilometres long with its unusually fine white sand. In summer The Blue Flag flies over the beach – that means the swimming area is clean and perfect for swimming.

INTRODUCTION

Jurmala Park

Liepaja Jurmala Park is the park by the seaside, which is 50 ha big. The park was created at the end of 19th century to beautify the place. It was planned as a spa resot, as well as to stop dust being blown into Liepaja. Jurmala Park has total of 140 indigenous and non-indigenous tree species. The park has children’s playground, several summer cafes, footpaths, and others attractions, such as sport complex with a stadium “Daugava”, the art piece “The Tree of Ghosts”, which plays music of the band “Līvi” and a open-air concert garden “Pūt, vējiņi!”

Liepaja Olympic Center

The city of Liepaja has many sport facilities around the city. In Brīvibas iela 39, you can find Liepaja Olympic Center, which has many uses. The building has five floors, where several halls for basketball, volleyball, floorball, table tennis, boxing, judo, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling, and many other sports are placed. The center is 18 000 square metres big.

Liepaja Ice Hall

In Brīvības iela 3/7, you can find Liepaja Ice Hall. Building of this facility started in 1997 and ended in 1998. Liepaja Ice Hall is home for the hockey club “HK Liepaja”.

Liepaja Tennis Hall

Liepaja Tennis Hall is located at Liedagu iela 7. From the name of the building, you can understand that this is the place, where you can watch and play tennis. Liepaja’s tennis history started at 1906, when St.Peterburg's newspapers wrote that inhabitants of Liepaja could start play tennis.

Raina park

Raina park takes it’s name from the most popular Latvian writer and poet Jānis Krišjānis Pliekšāns whose pseudonym is “Rainis”. Before the park was created, the place was called "Alksni" for the alder’s tree forest. Some researchers say that there was also a ancient Latvian shrine. But nowadays, it is the park, where you can have a good time. The park has also a children's playground and other attractive places.

Cycling

Liepaja City has more than 40 km long bicycle paths. In every road reconstruction project, creating new cycling path are considered, that’s why the cycling paths lenghts is always increasing. In different parts of Liepaja, there is different lenght of bicycle path. For example, Karosta has 12 km long road, but Vecliepaja (Old Liepaja – center of the city) has 11 km.
