Castro along with other activists established themselves in Mexico, they left from Veracruz to Cuba in 1956.

On the ship there were 82 people. The army was waiting for the ship to arrive at the Cuban Coast, finally they arrived at the beach of Las Coloradas on 2 December 1956.

1956-1958.At the Sierra Maestra the survivors organized small armed groups.

USA tried to take Batista off the Island; since their interests were compromised.Batista denied and launched an offensive military to the rebels. As a result, peasants, political parties and urban movements came together into the revolution.

The Cuban Missile Crisis

26 July 1953, Santiago de Cuba. The first armed action was the Assault on the Moncada Barracks, taken by a group of university students, one of them being Fidel Castro.

USA promoted Cuba expulsion from the Organization of American States (OAS), in 1962.

Cuba declared as a communist country and established an alliance with the USSR, hence a tension was created and led to 1962 the Missile Crisis.Khrushchev secretly deployed nuclear missiles to Cuba, to protect and counteract the threat from U.S. missiles in Italy and Turkey.

October 16, 1962. USA called an emergency meeting where John F. Kennedy chose a more careful approach to the invasion of the island.

October 22, 1962, Kennedy announced that the U.S. navy would intercept all shipments to Cuba however a naval blockade was considered an act of war.

The Cuban Missile Crisis

The Cuban government expropriated the Oil and Sugar companies, as well, as the banks and which belonged to the US. Consequently, USA made an economic blockade against Cuba, in October 1960.

A Soviet submarine with a nuclear torpedo was hit by a small depth charge belonging to the U.S. navy.

Commanders thought that the war had begun and were preparing to launch it. Three people had to authorize the launch but Vasili Arkhipov refused; it's likely that besides saving the day he also saved the world.

Washington D.C. Robert Kennedy (USA) met in secret with Anatoly Dobrynin (USS), to make an agreement.

Agreement: USA would remove their missiles from Italy and Turkey, they’d never invade Cuba, if the USSR withdraw from Cuba under U.N. inspection . The next morning the missiles were removed and the Crisis was over

  • The USSR as well as Cuba said that the missiles were only defensive, on the other hand the US demanded the removal of the missiles. In spite, USA was preparing for a possible invasion while the USSR continued to arm the missiles.
  • October 27, 1962, major Rudolph Anderson piloted a spy plane and ended up shot down by a soviet missile.

Ingteresting Fact: Castro wrote a Speech called “La historia me absolverá” in October 1963, around the time when he got arrested. where he narrates what happened in 1952 when Batista headed a coup d’État on March 10, occupying the power and unknowing the constitution.
