Did you know... (Scroll to see all photos and information!) Sant’Anna Institute was founded in 1998 as Sorrento Lingue. The founder and president, Dr. Cristiana Panicco, fell in love with the town of Sorrento and started the organization as a language school. A couple years after the school was founded, Dr. Panicco started hosting study abroad students in affiliation with US universities.   • The area surrounding Sorrento has many archaeological sites to visit. These are considered to be remnants of a town fused together by different cultures throughout its history. Some of the main historical stops to visit include:

  • A typical Italian dish is Gnocchi "Sorrento style" which includes potato gnocchi with tomato and mozzarella, topped with some more mozarella and pecorino. It is then broiled and baked in a hot oven 'until the cheese melts and the top forms a golden crust.
  • The streets of Sorrento: The ancient Greeks designed the narrow streets of Sorrento and intentionally positioned them to shade pedestrians from the sun.
  • Sorrento is only about thirty minutes of Pompeii, Capri, and Positano.

  • Sorrento gained notoriety in the 1800s as a holiday spot for the wealthy and famous. This seaside town has been a host to Luciano Pavarotti, Lord Byron, John Keats, Charles Dickens, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Heinrich Ibsen.
  • Legend has it that the Greek warrior Odysseus (the main character in The Odyssey) founded a temple devoted to the cult of the Sirens; mythological mermaids who lured sailors to their death with their bewitching songs. The city itself likely got its name from the sirens, rumored to swim off the coast of Sorrento.

  • Lemons in Sorrento are considered the best in the world thanks to the mineral rich volcanic soil compliments of Mount Vesuvius!
  • Sorrento is also famous for being the birthplace of Torquato Tasso (1544 – 1595), the great sixteenth century poet, whose works include “Jerusalem Delivered”, “Rinaldo” and “Aminta”.

The Kitchen (Scroll to see all photos and information!) Visit the kitchen for meals or just to mingle with friends! Our open-floor kitchen space contains shared electric stoves, ovens, fridges, dishes, glassware, small serving bowls, cutlery, pots and pans, and utensils. The Library: (Scroll to see all photos and information!) Our studio library is a printing point and also offers a wide range of books on all subjects related to the teaching interests of Sant'Anna! Residence Hall Facts (3rd and 4th floor dorms) (Scroll to see all photos and information!) Our Residence Hall has 23 bedrooms which are composed of double, triple, and quadruple rooming options. Each room includes: twin beds, desks, chairs, wardrobes, night tables, a mini fridge, and wireless and cable internet connection. Sea-view rooms feature a window and some garden-view rooms feature a balcony! Each room also contains: air conditioning, a ceiling lamp, blankets, bedspreads, bed linen, mattress pads, pillows, trash receptacles and has an ensuite bathroom with a shower, toilet, sink, and hot water. 3 towels are also given to each student. Information on Classrooms (1st and 2nd floor) (Scroll to see all photos and information!) Classrooms are located in the same building as residence halls, so most activities are located in the same area! Each classroom contains a smart board, a computer, a projector, Wi-Fi connection, and air conditioning. We are proud to use the experiential learning model where our students engage with their professors via site visits! Here are some examples:

  • Archaeology students spend a day at Pompeii
  • Business students have site visits at local businesses

Apartments and Host Family Housing Options! (Scroll to see all photos and information!) Shared Apartments Shared apartments are ideal for students looking for a more independent housing option! Every apartment has its own unique layout but each apartment comes with: Bed and linens, a closet/dresser, a desk, a stove, basic cooking and eating necessities, a kitchen table and chairs, Wi-Fi, TV, A/C, and a washing machine. (Students will be responsible for purchasing their own groceries, toiletries, cleaning supplies etc.) All apartments are situated in antique buildings, especially in historic centers, so students will be able to experience life in an authentic Italian apartment! Host Family Living: Sant’Anna Institute’s host families are located throughout Sorrento and are able to accommodate up to three students in each home. Host families will provide breakfast daily and students can choose the option to have dinner with the host family, too. Students will receive:

  • Breakfast
  • Bed in a private or shared room with Sant’Anna students
  • WiFi connection
  • Access to laundry
Homestay accommodations are on a first-come first-serve basis. For students who truly want the authentic Italian experience, staying with a local family is a great opportunity to experience the different culture through the wonderful food, daily interactions with the family, and ability to create a lifelong bond.
