If You Take Away the Otter written by Susannah Buhrman-Deever, illustrated by Matthew Trueman (J 599.7695 BUHRMAN-) "On the Pacific Coast of North America, sea otters play, dive, and hunt for sea urchins, crabs, abalone, and fish in the lush kelp forests beneath the waves. But there was a time when people hunted the otters almost to extinction. Without sea otters to eat them, an army of hungry sea urchins grew and destroyed entire kelp forests. Fish and other animals that depended on the kelp were lost, too. But when people protected the sea otters with new laws, their numbers began to recover, and so did the kelp forests. The author offers an account of a trophic cascade, which happens when the removal of a single element affects an entire habitat." A 2021 Orbis Pictus Honor Book. She didn't see any paintings of people who looked like her, either. So when she was offered a commission to paint portraits of accomplished African Americans, she jumped at the chance. Writers, singers, political activists, and thinkers all posed for her. Now her portraits hang in Washington, D.C.'s National Portrait Gallery, where children of all races can admire the beautiful shades of brown she captured." The Towner Book Award for Nonfiction Picture Books The Towner Award is named after Bill Towner, longtime Seattle librarian and mentor to dozens of librarians. Bill was an outstanding teacher-librarian who worked with thousands of students from all backgrounds and taught all of them his love of literature. Bill showed us how caring teachers and librarians can make a difference. A committee of public and school librarians from Washington state selected these ten nonfiction picture book nominees for the Towner Award, which is sponsored by the Washington Library Association School Library Division. In the spring, all Washington state students in public and independent schools, from second through sixth grades, are invited to vote for their favorite book if they have listened to or read a minimum of two titles.
