Origins and history of the Mexican peso

The beginnings of paper money in Mexico can be placed at the beginning of the 20th century. It was the Bank of Mexico, which began to function on September 1, 1925. This body was also charged with regulating monetary circulation, interest rates, and the exchange rate.

Between 1929 and 1930, paper money was established as the main payment instrument in the country. The first banknotes of the Bank of Mexico were printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York (ABNC) This first series (1925-1934), is made up of notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1 000 pesos Currently, there are nine types of banknotes and nine types of coins of different values, ranging from 5 cents to 1,000 pesos.
