Eddie Koiki Mabo
On the 3rd of June 1992, the high court of Australia decided that Australia was not Terra Nullius. Aboriginal Australians had ownership of their land. This decision was called the Mabo Decision due to Eddie Mabo, the person who tried to bring peace to the Indigenous people of Australia, and the 3rd of June is Mabo Day, naming after him.
What was happening?
Mabo Day was a significant event as Eddie Mabo tried to prove to everyone that Europeans were not the 1st people in Australia. Sadly, Eddie Mabo died due to lung cancer before the hearing of the judgement of the high court five months ago at the age of 55. He is still well known for how he fought for justice and his land rights.

When Eddie Mabo was young, he had fundamental rights in his country taken away. His people had to fight for Aboriginal peoples to be paid money for working. They fought for almost everything because they could not go anywhere where there were white Australians there.

During University
When Eddie Mabo was a young man, he became intrigued with the right of freedom of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. * Native Title means that they have rights to fish, hunt, practice ceremonies, and relation to land and water. When claiming the native title, people have to prove that their ancestors occupied the area before European arrival and continue to practice their culture there. The native title has never claimed over private property or areas with public buildings like schools and hospitals as it is a government building, meaning that it will benefit many people other than the Aboriginals.
Mabo, Reverend David Passi, Sam Passi, James Rice, and one of the Meriam women, Celia Mapo Sale, took their case to the High Court, the highest court in Australia. Mabo vs. Queensland became one of the most famous court cases in history. Mabo knew that he was not just fighting for his rights as he knew that if he won, every single Aboriginal person could have freedom and have a Native Title*. Some people opposed this point of view as it could affect their business and trade.
