INDEX

The American Civil War was a really important event in the history of USA that ocurred between 1861 and 1865. There were 2 sides: the United States (the Union) and the 11 Southern states that splitted and formed the Confederate States of America (CSA). They are also known as the North and the South respectively.

1. INTRODUCTION

The main point of the war was the slavery; the Union wanted to abolish it and the CSA disagreed with them. The election of Abrahan Lincoln as president in 1860, who wanted to abolish slavery, was the last thing that US needed to start a civil war. There were more little causes of the war, such us the economic gap between the North and the South.

2. Causes of the war

The beginning of the war was inmediately after the fundation of the confederation, the confederate forces took the most of federated forces that they had on their territories. The 4th may of 1861 Abraham Lincoln swore his president position, then , the south tried to negociate with him offering him to pay for the federate propierties, but he rejected this offer because signing any treaty with them it's like recognising the confederation like a sovereign government

3. The grouth of the war

Winfield Scott, the commanding general of the United States Army, proposed to the President Lincoln that he was going to use a special technique to win the war with the least amount of bloodshed. This tactic would be embodied in the Anaconda Plan, which would have two bases: one, to block all ports to weaken the Confederate economy, and two, to take the Mississippi River in order to divide the South in two. Lincoln accepted the plan, but at the same time, against Scott's suggestions, ordered an attack on Richmond, eager to end the war as soon as possible.

4. THE ANACONDA PLAN AND THE BLOCK

4. THE ANACONDA PLAN AND THE BLOCK

The blockade against the ports began in May 1861. At first it did not have many consequences, but as the Union navy gained strength, it became more effective and managed to end almost all the international trade of the Confederacy and especially with the cotton, base of its economy. British investors initially built small, fast ships that bypassed the blockade and traded weaponry and necessities from Bermuda, Cuba, and the Bahamas in exchange for cotton and tobacco.

In early 1864, Lincoln appointed Grant commander of all Union armies andGrant put Major General William T. Sherman in command of the Western troops. And since only the complete defeat of the Confederate forces and their economy could bring the end of the war, he sought to destroy their homes, farms, and railroads. Grant devised and coordinated a strategy to attack the Confederacy from numerous fronts trying to finish the war at the least time possible.

5. TOTAL WAR: SHERMAN AND SHERIDAN

General Philip Sheridan, replacing Franz Sigel, managed to win in the Valley Campaign of 1864 after defeating Major General Jubal A. Early in several battles, Sheridan then proceeded to destroy the agriculture of the Shenandoah Valley as Sherman would shortly after in Georgia.Meanwhile, Sherman advanced from Chattanooga toward Atlanta, defeating Confederate generals Joseph Johnston and John Bell along the way. The defeat of Atlanta on September 2, 1864 was a big factor in Lincoln's re-election as president. Hood left the Atlanta area to try to cut off Sherman's supply lines and invade Tennessee. Union Major General John M Schofield defeated Hood at the Battle of Franklin and George Thomas destroyed Hood's army by defeating him at the Battle of Nashville.

5. TOTAL WAR: SHERMAN AND SHERIDAN

On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his remaining hodgepodge of troops to the Northern Ulysses.General Lee, faced with the impossibility of continuing to resist the Union armies, which outnumbered and outnumbered him, decided that the time had come to lay down his arms.

6. outcome

The site chosen for the surrender ceremony was Wilmer McLean's living room at Appomatox Court House. General Lee showed up for the surrender looking flawless, however the Unionists looked much less resplendent. It was agreed that General Lee's men would no longer raise arms against the Union and that the weapons would be laid down.

7. CONSEQUENCES OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR :

The American Civil War was one of the wars that caused the highest number of casualties in the military history of the united states. The high number of victims left by the civil war in the united states was one of its most fateful consequences.

The economic effects of the war left the economy of the southern states in shambles. The power and prestige of the federal government ,and particularly president , spread throughout the country.

8. Symbols of the war

The flag is red and contains a blue cross, with borders and stars. Originally, this was the battle symbol of the confederate army of Northern Virginia.
