Objectives for this session

Designing for animated videos

Use cases and examples

Start with an analysis and try to answer yourself the following questions:

Let's design first

Design of all learning materials is really crucial nowadays. Below some considerations for the design

Unit 1

  • Who are my students? What is their age? digital skills?
  • How will the animated video match the course/module my studnets study?
  • How long is the module/course? and how long will be the video?
  • Is there any content e.g. scenarios that could be shown in the animated video?
  • How will my stuents access the video?
  • Will my students produce also an anmiated video?

Design and use cases

Let's now look at some use cases of the animiated videos

  • Scenario-based animated video
  • Intructional how to video
  • Presentation style

Unit 1

These videos describe a scenario showing a story of the main character and a situation that they found themselves. There is learning behind each of these scenarios and they are there to illustrate concepts, theory etc. This type of videos can be used in teaching soft skills e.g. interculural communication.

Instructional videos will provide insights how to use for example a system, and will be always fully infirmative with some specific information. This example

Unit 2:Powtoon and its functionalities

What is Powtoon and how you work off it?

Powtoon functionalities

Let's start with what is Powtoon?

Powtoon is a web based tool that allow you to create animated videos that look professional. In the free version of it you can still create nice videos , however it paid options give more possibilities. Before you get started:

  • Make sure you designed your video
  • You have a stable wi-fi connection
  • You decide if you are the voice-over artist or you might need to pay someone for audio tracks
  • Keep the script and for accessibility allow students to access it

Unit 2

Watch

How you arrange your slides, what transitions you might have from one slide to another

Slide Management

This is the main area where you can manage objects on screen. Timeline will dictate the pace of the video, when and what apprears

Timeline

Visual prompts

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Aenean commodo ligula eget dolor. Nullam dictum felis eu pede mollis pretiumLorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer elit.

Unit 2 Powtoon is structured around 3 areas:

On your left hand side you will find your slides and could arrange them here. It shows how your video can be organised.

Timeline is crucial to Powtoon and it manages all animations within the video.

Right side of the screen is the panel that gives you styles, also characters, backgrounds and prompts(objects) that you can use in your videos. Here you can decide if you want a whiteboard drawing like style of the video, more cartoony video or maybe a modern look.

Unit 2

Here you have the outline of your animated video - that should reflect your screenplan - each screen has a time limit so sometimes you might have the same idea presented in 3 screens. You can decide on screen transitions here, add and delete screens.

You add here minutes or remove them from your timeline. Remember about the time cue - as the extra second will be added where you are in your timeline.

Here you can preview your video- pause and replay if needed. Next to these buttons we have audio button - allowing you to add music or voice-over.

This is your main design canvas - you design here the look and feel of your animated video and can add/delete objects onto this area to make them appear in the video. How to manage your objects on screen - below the video

You can adjust the look of you Powtoon canvas and add a grid here to enable alignment of objects on screen. You can also increase the size of the screen here or change it to different dimensions.

Here you access different styles and change them. Styles of your video can impact what characters and objects are available to you. It would be recommended to keep to one style and use consistent look and feel in your animated videos.

Unit 3:Sharing options

Making Powtoon public

How to share with others

Once you develop your video you will want to share it with others...

You have some options to share your video: 1. Download as MP4 and have it uploaded to your VLE/LMS 2. Upload to Youtube - below video how to do it 3. Share a link from Powtoon

Unit 3

Powtoon is one of the user- friendly platforms for creating animated videos so let's start creating
