Microaggressions Cohort I completed a year long cohort on Microaggressions with Dr. Roger Cleveland. This was the inaugural session and the cohort will be now be offered annually through JCPS. With a small group, I completed an interactive presentation on microaggressions to be used as a professional development session for our school. This can be included in 2021-22 PD offerings at Newcomer Academy if approved by the ILT. American Association of School Librarians National Conference My proposal has been accepted to present at this year's AASL National Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah (October 21-23, 2021). My session is entitled Empowering ELLs for Self-Sufficiency in the School Library. The session will help school librarians recognize and reach their ELL patrons and will offer tools, tips and strategies for having those patrons self-navigate library books and resources as well as ensuring that the library has a collection that mirrors ELL student lived experiences. Library Media Services Summer Academy I will attend the two day summer academy provided by Library Media Services. This year's academy is entitled Libraries Open Doors. (June 14-15, 2021.) KYCEL I will assist Hicham Roida in presenting our work on creating Project Perspective, a podcast about developing empathy by listening to personal stories that showcase a variety of perspectives on current issues and events. (June 14, 2021) Project Based Learning with Newcomers With Hicham Roida, I will present a webinar for Saddleback Publishing that showcases the work done at Newcomer Academy in using PBL with our students, especially during NTI. We will provide participants with tools and strategies they can utilize right away in supporting ELLs and all students in engaging in Project Based Learning. (July 29, 2021)

Negative Impacts of NTI

  • Book circulation fell from over 10,000 books checked out last year to under 100 this year.
  • Curbside book dropoff and pickup was offered but not utilized by students during school closure.
  • Book Club attempted through Google Classroom but was not utilized by students.
  • Books Lost: 669 Books Remaining: 8,487 Value of Lost Books: $11,413.74
  • Loss of revenue from book fair.
Benefits of NTI
  • HIgh proficiency levels in using the Google Suite for Education by staff and students.
  • Increased familiarity and usage of other educational apps/tools.
  • Increased student and staff usage of ebooks through the NCA Library Website.
Next Steps 2021-2022
  • I anticipate a return to in person schooling will increase circulation to previous levels.
  • Return to school-wide reading incentive program will also increase circulation.
  • $7,000 was spent in February 2021 to replace lost popular book titles. I am grateful for this funding.
  • Scholastic Book Fair scheduled for February 2022 during Parent-Teacher conference. Family literacy activity will be offered.
  • 12 LEGO SPIKE Prime kits will be available for checkout to students and teachers next year.
  • Art kits will also be available for student checkout including basket weaving, stencil drawing, duct tape projects, origami and more.
  • Dr. Reynolds has called for a focus on literacy in district libraries. I will plan activities and initiatives for the upcoming academic year to meet this call including a return to our school-wide reading initiative, an increase in content related/PBL embedded read-alouds including short literacy lessons and exploring how I might further support the work of our ESL Team as they continue our Guided Reading program. LMS is also increasing our district collection of ebooks for the upcoming year.
