A machine is something we use to make work easier. We can put simple machines together to make complex machines.

A SCREW is used to hold things together or to lift objects.

AN INCLINED PLANE is used to move objects up and down different levels.

We use NUTS and BOLTS to hold objects together.

We use a HAMMER to knock nails into a surface.

The steam machine was also used in ships and trains. People could travel more quickly from one place to another. The steam train could also carry more people and products. This was a transport revolution.People built railways to connect cities in Europe.

The industrial revolution started in the United Kingdom 250 years ago with the invention of the STEAM ENGINE (James Watt). The steam engine used the steam from boiling water. Machines could make objects in factories.

Now we use COMPUTERS, TABLETS and SMARTPHONES.

The TELEPHONE was invented about 140 years ago.

The TELEGRAPH was invented about 170 years ago and started a communication revolution.The telegraph sent tapped messages using electrical signals. (Samuel Morse).
