Multiplying Fractions

How do you multiply ¾ x 5?

There are 3 ways:

Using repeated addition

¾ + ¾ + ¾ + ¾ + ¾ = 15/4

(add the numerators; keep the denominator the same)

Using a model

+ + + + = 15 fourths

Multiplying across numerators and denominators

3 x 5 = 15

4 1 4

----Put the whole number (5) over a denominator of 1

Don’t forget to simplify IMPROPER fractions by dividing: 15/4=3 ¾

Game On!

two truths and a lie

  1. 6 X 7/12 IS 6 1/3
  2. 4/5 X 10 IS 8
  3. 14 X 2/3 IS 27 1/3

CAN YOU SPOT THE LIE?

TOP times TOP

And BOTTOM times BOTTOM

Don't forget to SIMPLIFY

1. Split numerator and denominator into factors.

2. Cross out like factors on top and bottom

3. Keep the other factor

  1. 1. lie! 6 X 7/12 IS 6 1/2
  2. 2. Truth! 4/5 X 10 IS 8
  3. 3. Truth! 14 X 2/3 IS 27 1/3

Steps for Dividing Fractions: KCF

*Always put a 1 under a whole number 818/11)

K: Keep the 1st fraction

C: Change the ➗ sign to x

F: Flip the 2nd fraction

⭐To make a whole number a fraction, put a 1 under it!

FACT!

1/3 ➗ 6 = 1/3 X 1/6 = 1/18

🥇

Divide By Fractions with Models

🧠Think about it

Say you have one half of a pizza. You want to split it among you and 3 of your friends. How much of the pizza will each of you get? Draw a picture first, then choose an answer below:

a. 8 pizzas

b. 181/8 pizza

c. 6 pizzas

d. 161/6 pizza

Think about the pizza example, if you start with a fraction, each person must get a fraction!

1/2 ➗ 4 = 1/8 so option B!

🎤Sing it with me!

When dividing fractions and a whole over 1
Keep, change, flip is so much fun
Multiply instead of divide
Then the answer must be simplified

Keep 1/2

Change ➗ to ✖

Flip 4 into 1/4

1/2 x 1/4 = 1/8

1/8 is simplified because it is a UNIT FRACTION: has a 1 in the numerator. 🧙‍♂️

FACT!

1/3 ➗ 6 = 1/3 X 1/6 = 1/18

Order of Operations

If there is more than 1 operation (✖➗➕➖), you must follow GEMDAS

+ info

G: Grouping symbols first ( ) [ ] { }

E: Exponents (not taught in 5th grade)

MD: Multiply and Divide from LEFT to RIGHT

AS: Add and Subtract from LEFT to RIGHT

(9 x 3 ) - 2 + 4 There are (parentheses), so solve (9x3) first

27 - 2 +4 Bring down the rest of the expression,

25 + 4 Adding and subtracting Left to Right, so subtract next to get 25

29 Finally, only addition is left, and the answer is 29
