The “Liceu de Braga” was created by Passos Manuel in 1836, during queen D. Maria II reign, by decree on November 17th in which, within the scope of the Reform of Public Instruction advocated by the Septembrist policy, created a National Lyceum in each capital of District.

The current facilities had been a college of the Congregation of Espírito Santo until the implantation of the Republic (1910), when that congregation was expelled . Ten years later, the old college was considered a suitable place for the installation of the Lyceum.
