Our heritage is the things we have from the past. This includes written sources, artefacts and buildings, art and music. We can learn about the past from these sources.

OUR HERITAGE

The Spanish Constitution(Document of 1978)

Don Quijote(Novel written by Miguel de Cervantes)

Letter (From King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I to Christopher Columbus)

Glosas Emilenses (Documents from the 12th century)

Written sources can teach us about people and places in the past. They can also describe important historical events. Written sources can include letters, diaries, maps, newspapers, official documents and books.

Olive millstone(It was used to grind olives and make olive oil in the 19th century)

Woman dress(Women wore dresses like this one in the 18th century)

Suit of armour(Medieval knights wore these suits for protection)

Roman coins(Silver coins to buy things)

Neolithic bowl (It was used to store and prepare food)

Archaeologists discover objects -called artefacts- that people made in the past. These give us clues about where, when and how people lived.Artefacts are very important for finding out about Prehistory because people didn’t know how to write then.

Plaza de España (Sevilla)(It was built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929)

Walls in Ávila(They were ordered to be built by king Alfonso VI in the 11th century to protect the city)

Roman amphitheatre(It was built in Mérida in 8 B.C. and used by people to watch gladiators’ fights)

Sierra de Atapuerca(Archaeologists found artefacts and fossils of humans that lived in this cave 800 000 years ago)

Archaeologist also study buildings and places to learn about the past. These historical sites can give us information about important people, special events and everyday life in the past.

The Court of the Lions(Large fountain located in the Alhambra, Granada. (14th century))

Mosaic(It shows the face of Medusa, a monster from Greek mythology. (2nd century))

Painting of Baltasar Carlos(Velázquez painted many portraits for the royal family of King Philip IV)

Guernica(It was painted by Pablo Picasso during the Spanish Civil War. (1937))

Cave of Altamira(This image of a bison was painted in 15 000 B.C. in the Cave of Altamira, Cantabria.)

Paintings, sculptures and other images can teach us about important people, places and events. They can teach us about the daily lives, beliefs and traditions of people in the past.

ART

Music and dance can also teach us about life in the past.Musical instruments, songs and dance are an important part of every culture.

Castanets(They were first made thousands of years ago and are a traditional musical instrument in Spain.)

Chotis(The music is commonly played by 'organilllos' (street organs) and 'pianolas'. It is very popular in Madrid and people wear traditional clothes on 15th May every year.)

Cantigas de Santa María(Illustrated book of 420 religious songs from the Middle Ages)

Traditions(We can learn about traditions from our family and local community)

Interview(We can interview people and ask them questions about their lives and experiences)

Speech(We can listen to speeches to learn about important people and events)

Storytelling(It is the oldest form of teaching others about history)

Other people can teach us about life in the past. They can share information with us about their personal experiences.
