MEETING NINE and 1/2 - ANCIENT MYTHS

4/5/2021

Do you remember what a legend is?

It is a story which some people believe may really have happened in the past.

Its characters are heroes, heroines, princes, knights, princesses, monsters etc.

And what is a MYTH?

It's a traditional story, especially concerning the early history of people, tribe or country, or explaining a natural phenomenon.

MYTHS typically feature supernatural characters or events.

MYTHS answer the questions of WHY things happen.

In the old days people didn't know science and they didn't understand how the universe worked.

Why does it rain?

Why are there storms?

Why are there stars in the sky?

Why do rainbows appear after the rain?

All cultures have their own myths.

A collection of MYTHS is called "MYTHOLOGY".

The most famous mythology, on which our European civilization is based, is the mythology of ANCIENT GREECE.

Some of the myths of Ancient Greece are over 3000 years old!

Today, we will tell you about a very famous myth from ancient Greece.

It answers the question:Why are there different seasonsin a year?

How did the seasons come to be?

According to the Greeks, the world was ruled by three brothers:

ZEUS

who ruled the sky and wasthe most important, the boss

POSEIDON

who ruled the seas and oceans

HADES

who ruled the underworld

One day, Hades was walking in the fields with his three-headed dog.

Suddenly, he saw a beautiful young woman, Persephone.

He fell in love with her immediately!

Please, be my wife!

No way! I don't want to live in the underworld!

But I love you!

And I love the sun, grass and flowers!

Hades wanted to marry Persephone, but she didn't want to live in the underworld with him.

Hades was very angry.

He decided to kidnap Persephone.

AND THIS IS WHAT HE DID!

Hades took Persephone to his kingdom in the underworld.

He made herhis queen.

Persephone was not happy about it.

Hades told his servants to give Persephone something to eat.

She was hungry, so she ate some pomegranate seeds...

She didn't knowthe rule: if you eat anything in the underworld, you can never leave!

In the meantime, Demeter, Persephone's mother, was looking for her daughter everywhere.

She was so unhappy that hergrief made the fields dry,and soon crops started to fail.

She couldn't find her...

Demeter decidedto ask Zeus for help.

Zeus was not happy about it, but he promised to do something.

Zeus talked to his brother Hades.

Let Persephone go!

I don't want to.

Demeter is very angry!

Persephone stays!

Grrrr...!

Because of Demeter's pain, the earth was dry and fields gave no crops. People starved.

Then, Zeus had an idea!

I know what to do!

Persephone will spend six months with her husband....

... and six months with her mother.

Now, when Persephoneis in the underworld, Demeter is sad.The fields are dry and give no crops. It is coldand gloomy. It is autumnand winter.

But then, Persephone comes back to her mother for half a year.
