Sports in Modern Olympics

Sports like the discus throw, javelin throw, wrestling, archery, and equestrian events like horseback riding that existed in the first Olympic games in 776 B.C are still around today. Today there's a modern version of a pentathlon which includes fencing, swimming, horse riding, pistol shooting and running which was similar to back then but the events were discus throw, javelin throw, long jump, 200 yard sprint and wrestling.

The Olympics today take place every four years in the winter and summer. There are a lot more sports in the summer than in the winter. Summer Olympic sports consist of basketball, archery, soccer, gymnastics, swimming, beach volleyball, diving, fencing, judo, karate, modern version of a pentathlon, cycling, rowing, rugby, sailing, tennis, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling and pretty much every event that's outdoors. The International Olympics Committee also added break dancing as one of the new events to the summer games and would make it's first appearance in the Tokyo games.

The winter olympics have a lot fewer events than the summer because not every event can be done indoors and most of these events require ice or snow. Winter olympic sports consist of skiing, a biathlon which is cross-country skiing followed by rifle shooting, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, ice hockey, luge which is an event where a person lays down in a sled and launches themself to try and get the fastest speed and has to steer around an ice course, speed skating, ski jump, and snow boarding.

The olympics today also hold special events for paralyzed people called the paralympics. Events here are archery, badminton, boccia, canoeing, football 5-a-side, goalball, judo, powerlifting, rowing, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.

Sports have evolved so much since the start of the olympics. Events like running and wrestling have stood the test of time but there has also been the additions of sports created from all around the world.
