Description of the sea lion
The sea lion belongs to the family of seals and walruses, and lives in different regions of the world, always on the coasts. It has the ability can to dive up to 200 meters deep and stay in the water for 40 minutes without surfacing to breathe. Another of their records is their swimming speed: 40 km / h.
Characteristics of the sea lion
- They are mammals.
- They feed on a variety of fish, squid, crustaceans and starfish, some also eat penguins.
- They have external ears.
- Their skin is thick.
- Their fur is short and very voluminous.
- They live in the extremely cold sub-arctic areas, although others prefer to live in the warm waters of the tropics.
Why is it danger?
Sea lions are in danger of extinction because of hunting by South American natives, poaching of the Californian species, trawling that reduces the availability of food and pollutants, are the main causes of the population decline of these sea lions.
What can we do to help?
We can help sea lions from hunting by avoiding it and forbidding it so that hunting does not exist neither in sea lions nor in other animals and to help them from pollution is not to throw more plastics on the ground or into the sea, avoid global warming.
