It is located on Liberty Island south of Manhattan Island, next to the mouth of the Hudson River and near Ellis Island. The Empire State Building has been named by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.4 The building and its interior are listed as monuments by the New York Commission for the Preservation of Historic Monuments, and confirmed by the New York City Board of Estimation. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The building is owned and managed by W&H Properties. The site of the Empire State Building was first developed as John Thomson's Farm in the late 18th century. At the time, a stream was running across the site, flowing into Sunfish Pond, located a block away. Later the place was occupied by the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in the late nineteenth century, and was frequented by "The Four Hundred", the social elite of New York.

It is a national holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada, as well as in some Caribbean islands, Liberia, and by American expat communities in Central America and Israel. Originally, it was a day of appreciation for the harvest and for the past year. Similar end-of-year holidays are observed in Germany, Switzerland and Japan. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, and the second Monday in October in Canada.
