The giver.
I gave this book 4 stars because I liked the characters but I prefer a happier plot.
Jonas ( main character) Fiona ( love interest) The Giver Fletcher Gabe (baby) Lily (sister) Chief Elder (antagonist) Rosemary
In a futuristic utopia, where people don´t see color, feel emotions or pain. Everybody has an assigned family unit. And kids as they grow they get a small gift as signs of growth like a jacket, then a jacket with pockets, then a bike, bit then at the age of twelve people are assigned jobs like architect or nurturer, for everything to function with peace. Jonas is an 11-year-old boy who is about to be assigned his job as a Receiver, which is a job that consists of working with The Giver who will help train Jonas and pass him memories of him. This job is to help the other people's memories from releasing which would cause chaos. But the Giver will help Jonas save everybody, including his baby brother Gabe, from the numbness people have been used to living in this "utopia".
“The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.” ― Lois Lowry, The Giver “We gained control of many things. But we had to let go of others.” ― Lois Lowry, The Giver “The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. The life without colour, pain or past.” ― Lois Lowry, The Giver “It is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything.” ― Lois Lowry “There is something about that moment, when literature becomes accessible, and a door of the world opens. ” ― Lois Lowry
Author Lois Lowry published her first novel, A Summer to Die, in 1977. After this serious drama, Lowry showed her lighter side with 1979's Anastasia Krupnik, which became the first in a series of humorous books. She won her first Newbery Award for the 1989 novel Number the Stars. In 1993, Lowry received the honor a second time for The Giver, which would eventually become a 2014 film. More recent works include Son (2012) and Gooney Bird and All Her Charms (2013). She was around 8 or 9 years old when she decided she wanted to be a writer. Her father was a dentist and Army officer, which led to her to live in several different places growing up. Lowry spent some of her school year in Japan, but she ended up graduating from a New York City high school.
~ SOME FUN FACTS ~ A visit to Lowry's father in a nursing home helped inspire the novel. The Giver on the cover was celebrated in his own right. Nelson may also have inspired the Giver. Nelson had something in common with the Giver. Some readers condemn the book as pro-euthanasia or pro-abortion. The book received some harsh reviews
Feelings In the books you don't feel sad, or happy or angry, or any pain, and you might think it's amazing that they don't have to feel that, but feelings and pain are the things that actually makes us feel like we are alive. Perspective In the book it seems as Fletcher is a bad guy when in reality he is only doing his job, in his mind he is just doing the right thing....or the only thing he knows. Its the same with the dad, in the scene where he kills one twin, you might say it's horrible and it is but for him its just his job and in his mind its the only thing he knows. Realization When Jonas starts his job as a Receiver, and starts getting to know him, and starts to see color, it's like an awakening, a whole new perspective on life and his "perfect" society.
