This image is the goal/hoop for the first sport played with a ball recorded in history "Pitz ball game." The game is played with a large rubber ball being kept in motion by the use of your hips. The game is played with 2 to 4 people on the court.
Pitz originated in Mayan culture but was later adopted by mexican societies. Pitz is still played today in some parts of Mexico including Ulama, the original courts date back to 1400 b.c.
Pitz originated from the story of hunahpu and Xbalanque, two ancient heros from Mayan culture that used the game Pitz to restore the decapitated brothers head. It was recently believed that the losers of the ancient Mayan game were killed, however this was a mural about the story of Hunahpu and Xbalanque using a skull as the bat. Researchers found this mural and thought it depicted the skulls of the people who lost the game.
In Mayan society good ball players were favored by Women and supposedly by the Gods, they were like celebrities in Mayan culture. Pitz was such an important game that occasionally the game would replace war and conflict. Two kings would play a game of PItz to settle the conflict without violence.

The ancient Maya ballgame named "pitz" was part of the political, religious, and social life, Pitz was played with a rubber ball that could be the size of a softball to the size of a soccer ball. The players in the game would try to bounce the rubber balls into the stone hoops on each side of the court, the players wore protective gear on there chests arms and legs to protect them from injuring themselves with the 20lb ball. This ballgame was also an alternative to war and fighting with neighboring cities, just as in current day sports there was political signs, murals depicting heros, creation myths, and transferring of political power as sort of ads or agenda. Maya Archaeologist - Dr Diane Davies. 6 Apr. 2021, www.mayaarchaeologist.co.uk/school-resources/maya-world/pok-ta-pok/. The loser of the ballgame Pitz are actually not killed/sacrificed as previously believed, it was also believed that the Mayans used skulls as bats the play the game, however this mural wear it was depicted was actually a re inactment of the story of Hunahpu and Xbalanque. The exception of this is when the game was played instead of a war, where the winning team would kill the losing team instead of having a war. The idea behind the game is based on ancient story about Hunahpu and Xbalanque two twin heros in which they play the game to restore the one hero brother from being decapitated.
