Discovering the History of New York City
New York !
New York City is the most populous city of the USA and its economic and cultural center since the 1900s. Known as “The Big Apple” and “The city that never sleeps”, New York City consists of five boroughs: Manhattan Island, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens on Long Island, and Staten Island. New York has a population of 8.3 million people, coming from all parts of the world. Its reputation as a multicultural city, a melting pot has made it a popular destination for immigrants, with Ellis Island being an immigration center in the 1890s-1920s.
Colonial era
New York City was founded as "New Amsterdam" in 1624. Then, in 1664, England seized New York. The city became a trading center under Great Britain in the early 18th century. Later, in 1754 Columbia University was founded as “King’s College”. New York City only consisted of Manhattan at the time and was simply called "York City".
American revolutionary war
New York became a center of new ideas and patriotism as the American Revolution began in 1775. In 1783, the war ended with the treaty of Paris. The British evacuated New York which became the Capital city of the Independent United States until Washington DC replaced it in 1790.
The Industrial Revolution
At that time, New York City expanded from Manhattan to Long Island, Staten Island, and The Bronx. In the mid-19th century, immigration to the city increased, beginning with Irish emigrants fleeing the Great Famine in the 1840s. Later, Poles, African-Americans, Germans, and other groups began moving. After the American Civil War (1861-1865), millions of people arrived from all parts of the world: Ireland, Italy, the Russian Empire, and other European nations. The city became a multicultural center with communities all around the city.
1900s
In 1898, the city of Brooklyn, the County of New York (Manhattan and The Bronx), Richmond County, and Queens County united into a single city: New York City, which was divided into the five boroughs of Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. In the 1920s, New York was the location of the Harlem Renaissance as African-American art flourished in Harlem. After World War II, New York became the leading city of the world in terms of economics, international relations and culture. Indeed, New York and especially Broadway replaced Paris as the center of Art.
Late 20th, 21st century
On the 1970s, crimes and poverty increased in the city because of the industrial reconstruction. Then, on September 11th 2001, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were crashed into the World Trade Center by terrorists affiliated with the al-Qaeda terrorist group. The attack shook the whole world. 2,192 civilians, 343 firefighters, and 71 law enforcement officers were killed. The site became the famous "Ground Zero" and later, the One World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial Museum. Last, but not least, in 2008, New York was the epicenter of the 2008 financial crisis, starting at Wall Street and spreading worldwide, a crisis which had long-lasted effects.
