THE EIFFEL TOWER
The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World’s Fair, which was celebrating the 100th year anniversary of the French Revolution.
The Eiffel Tower is 1,063 feet tall, and is the tallest structure in Paris. It is sometimes called "La dame de fer" which is French for “Iron Lady.”
The construction of the Eiffel Tower took two years, two months, and five days. At this time, it was an important technical and architectural achievement. Although the Eiffel Tower was only meant to last 20 years, it was saved. It was used for radio transmissions, and as a military radio post in 1903.
The Eiffel Tower receives 7 million visitors a year, making it the most visited monument you have to pay to visit in the world. Since its opening in 1889, roughly 300 million visitors have come from all over to see it.
