Neighbourhoods

This neighborhood is also known as the gipsy neighborhood.

Sacromonte

Here, every local shows exciting flamenco dancings that you won't find in any another place. The most important monument of the area is the Sacromonte's abbey which shows panoramic views of the city. There are also hiking and cycling routes that go into the mountains. An old tale explains that there's gold hidden in Sacromonte's mountains after Granada's reconquest. Slaves tried to be free by looking for that gold in the mountains, but they hadn't found it and it's still a mystery where it is hidden.

Albaicín is the most ancient neighbourhood of Granada.

Albaicín

Albaicín was declared World Heritage by the Unesco in 1994. This neighbourhood shows an unique and well conserved hispanic-muslim architecture from the Middle Ages. It's the best place to relax and walk through its streets, the most famous is Saint Nichola's balcony. Nowadays the Albaicin is the most visited place of Granada, next to the Alhambra, thanks to it's antique and beautiful history.

The realejo was the jewish district and is located in the southwest of our city.

Realejo

Inside of the Realejo, we can find some churches like Santo Domingo, which dates back from the year 1512 and has symbols of the Catholic Monarchs. Another famous church from this area is San Cecilio, which is near “Campo del Príncipe”, a big square which is the centre of the neighbourhood and a place where people used to meet and pray. Nowadays, it's a nice place to spend time relaxing or eating. Another square is “Puerta del Sol”, it is a place where you can find an old sink from the 17th Century where women used to wash their clothes.

Granada centre

The Royal San Jerónimo´s Monastery is another important Renaissance´s building. It was founded, like many others, by the Catholic kings, and today, a few monks still live there.

In Granada’s Centre you can also visit the “Alcaicería”, a typical Muslim neighborhood that has been turned into a comercial area where handmade typical granada’s objects are sold, such as ceramic objects and jewels.

In the center of the town we can find the Cathedral. This monument was built in the 16th Century by Diego Siloe and it has a Renaissance style. It measures 116 meters high. Next to it, the Royal Chapel is located and inside it, some ancient spanish Monarchs are buried.

Places to visit

The most important monument in the whole city.

Alhambra

Every year , it receives around 2.600.000 visitors and since 1984 is a World Heritage Site. This monument was built by the Muslims in the 13th century, but when in the 15th Century the Catholic Monarchs reconquered Granada, some changes were made in the Alhambra.

This park-museum was the first interactive science park of the whole region of Andalusia. It counts with 70.000 square metres and seven pavilions where different expositions about health, chemistry, environment or astronomy are made. From those 70.000 square metres, 25.000 of them are green areas in which are expositions like birds, butterflies and other natural subjects.

Federico García Lorca’s Park

The park has 71.500 square kilometres. Inside it, you can find from beautiful and exotic flowers to a pond where tens of ducks live.

This public park which was opened up in the year 1995 was built as a tribute to Federico Garcia Lorca. The park is constructed surrounding the original house in which this writer spent his last hours before being arrested and killed during the Spanish Civil War because of his homosexuality.

Events in Granada

Is a very important music festival which takes place in Granada every year. Lots of groups and singers who play different music styles, especially indie and pop music, give concerts one after another on the same day. Around 25,000 people go every year to the festival during the two days it lasts. It’s a very good opportunity because you can attend several concerts while paying much less than you would pay if you watched them all separately.

For the catholics, the holy week is a period of seven days which takes place between march and april and it’s dedicated to remember the passion, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. During those seven days, the streets of our city are full of people from all over the world who come here to see the processions. They’re the representation of the whole passion of Christ, and they tell some passages of the Bible in the form of big figures of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.

Holy week

It has its origin in the Symphonic Concerts that were celebrated in Granada from the year 1833 during the feast of the Corpus Christi, which also takes place in June. The festival was created in 1954 in order to create a cultural atmosphere in our city after the civil war. In 2021, this festival will celebrate its 70th edition.

Festival of Music and Dance

The International festival of Music and Dance takes place in Granada between June and July, is one of the most attractive cultural events in Spain.

The Cross Day

The Cross day is exclusively a festivity of our city and it takes place annually during the 3rd of May. During this day, the streets, squares, courtyards and even the shops displays are fully decorated with altars in tribute to the Holy Cross. This celebration has both pagan and cristian origins.

It is one of the most important festivities for the catholics. It portrays the presence of Jesus during the Eucharist. It takes place on the whole week, a procession goes through the main streets of Granada, and even a funfair is assembled.

How to comute in Granada?

Here in Granada we normally move on foot because of its size. But in case you need something to move around the city, we have a lot of public transports to use. We have huge bus lines that are divided in two groups: green buses which are for moving from the city to the villages and red buses wich are for moving through the city center. We also have an underground that is very nice to move around our outskirts. In addition, there are taxis, but in our opinion it is not the best idea because of its prize.
