The children are very acutely aware of what’s going on in the world. They’ve been even more connected to their social enterprise than usual as its made things even more relatable to them as they know what it feels like to be isolated and not able to mix - it has made them even more determined to do something.

Bargarran Primary School are an incredible group who have really persevered and adapted to overcome the difficulties of COVID restrictions, they’ve changed their community café idea into a boxes of happiness social enterprise aiming to provide a lift to local care homes and the whole community.

View our Comic to learn more about Nature's Wood

Social Enterprise in Education Award

This school’s social enterprise is to transform a ‘forgotten corner’ of the school grounds into a safe and happier space for outdoor learning. From clearing rubbish to lopping branches to making natural paths to collecting branches to building dens and bird boxes, this very busy group of P6 and 7’s are helping the environment and keeping it safe for nature and children. Creating ‘Nature’s Wood' was made possible through the hard work of all involved, including writing letters to businesses in the local community asking for support and resources. They hope to continue to keep their space as wild as possible, sustaining it for many decades to come.

The Gaelic pupils from Craighill Primary, Highland, carried out a wealth of research and presented our Dragons in our Gaelic Dragons’ Den competition with no less than four wonderful ideas for social enterprise! They all reached the finals and Garaidhean Ròs, Rose Garden, was deemed the most sustainable project with great potential for connections in the community. As well as funding and organising local and regular litterpicks, they’re running a campaign with good signage to persuade local businesses to take responsibility for different sections of the High Street.

P7 Pupils at the school wanted to highlight the environmental impact of importing New Zealand wool and to promote the use of wool from local crofters on the Isle of Skye, whose fleeces often were having to go to waste. The pupils involved parents and NFU Scotland to help them create their wool ball product for tumble driers and are now successfully marketing them across social media channels and at local sales points. They made a persuasive pitch to our Gaelic Dragons via video and won seed-funding for their venture! Pupils plan to develop a range of wool products and will handover the business to younger pupils when they transition to High School.

We want to achieve inclusivity for all among the world so we are starting in our school and this will then impact on our community. The knock on effect will hopefully influence wider society and the government. We would love to make sure all of the UK schools and community centres will be inclusive of all regardless of race, sex, gender and everyone feels they are safe and welcome in the places they inhabit."

Taking part in our DYW Live 8 week block, pupils from Callander Primary have engaged in some very thought-provoking conversations around equality and inclusivity within society. Initially focusing on aiming to reduce homophobia, they developed a Safe Place for people to come together and talk. Very quickly, they decided that it should be inclusive for all and now run their safe space to help pupils in their school who are going through a rough time either in or outside of school. They are aiming high and want to achieve inclusivity for all, make people aware that everyone is equal and try to ensure that everyone’s opinions should be respected. In order to furnish and make their space warm and inviting they are selling stress balls and fidget toys as well as running different fundraising events.

Dairsie Primary already have a well established community café and gardening social enterprise. Due to the pandemic the café has not been able to run but pupils wanted to build on what they have been doing and have set up a paper recycling social enterprise called Plants for Trees. Wanting to help the environment by reducing and reusing, the pupils are using the recycled paper to make notebooks, seedling planters and greeting cards to name but a few of their products. They are planning on selling their recycled paper products at their community café once it reopens and are using profits to support the Ecological Centre in Fife.

Through investigating the Sustainable Global Goals, Primary 5 pupils at Dunblane Primary identified that their school had a problem with too much litter in the playground and also that they used too many plastic bottles due to COVID restrictions at lunchtime. Determined to make a difference to global warming, plastic pollution and caring for animals they had ambitious plans, so they very quickly set up two social enterprises. One focuses on recycling crisp bags, by collecting these from their peers, they then make and sell crisp bag necklaces. Not only helping the environment but they also donate their profits to RSPCA and WWF. The other social enterprise collects all the plastic bottles in the school and turns them into mindfulness jars, again helping reduce plastic pollution but also helping support health and wellbeing within their school.

Earlston High School

Earlston High School initially started out with one social enterprise but have been so inspired and enjoyed the process, they have recently set up another. Their first social enterprise sells home- made stress balls and upcycled bespoke planters to the school and wider community and they use their profits to support various social causes. With their second one they create and sell beautiful hanging flower baskets with profits going to Social Bite who they came across as part of their social enterprise work. Both of these activities allow pupils to gain valuable SQA qualifications.

Having developed a school allotment last year, pupils at Easter Carmuirs were growing and selling their own produce and using their profits to help people in their community. After returning to school after lockdown their garden was looking very sad so they have been working really hard to get it back up and running. Already they have managed to grow potatoes, garlic, onions and strawberries and are continuing to improve their space further with new raised beds and reusing some old tyres to use as planters too. Hopefully with the more produce they grow, they can help their pupils and families learn more about healthy eating through selling bags of produce with recipe cards whilst also using their profits to buy and donate products to their local food bank.

#dontrecycleracism

Social Enterprise in Education Award

The Dundee & Angus Dragons’ Den 2021 Winners, #dontrecycleracism aims to raise awareness of the impact racism has on local communities and educate children with how to deal with racism when they are victims or witnesses. They want to promote the eradication of Racism and Inequality through collaboration with sustainably minded partnerships. To do this, the Primary 5 children at Glebelands Primary have worked with Biffa and Jigsaw Media to design and create a sticker that will be placed on over 1000 bins in the local area and all bins in the primary school classrooms. The sticker features a QR code that links to their bespoke website which will be updated with relevant information to educate and help primary school aged children and their parents. They have also sourced some sustainable products, namely aluminium water bottles and totebags which bear #dontrecycleracism and they are selling them on their website to help provide them with the money they need to make their social enterprise sustainable.

Glenbervie Primary already have a well-established community café social enterprise, however due to COVID they had to adapt what they do in order to continue making a difference to people in their community. Some of the pupils decided to run a tuck shop to ensure that every child in their school could have a varied and healthy option of their snack, they even cleverly made the healthiest options the cheapest! The profits from their tuck shop are being used to help their community, for example they are operating Community drop offs, delivering food bags and artwork to local residents.

Running their Dementia café since 2019, has helped the pupils taking part develop their confidence, and team working skills – being able to be part of their social enterprise has given them pride in their school and what they can achieve. Since lockdown, they had to start thinking creatively as COVID restrictions meant they weren’t able to run their café. They began to focus on producing their pom-pom wreaths, even creating some special Christmas editions and were able to raise some money for Alzheimer Scotland. As one of our Champion schools they continue to adapt and are looking at ways to continue to connect with and help their café customers, including a joint up-cycling furniture venture and potentially even filming walks around their local area as a great memory prompt for those suffering with Dementia.

Litter Lifters

Autism Helping Boxes

Social Enterprise in Education Award

After holding their own ‘Inver Dragons’ Den’, the Primary 7’s at Inverbrothock Primary School set up two social enterprises. AHB (Autism Helping Bags) aims to provide support for people in their school with autism. To do this, they identified a selection of fidget toys which they will provide for free to each class in the school, they also feel that they could expand into help anybody with problems concentrating in class. Litter Lifters, identified an issue with litter in their school and local community. They designed and have made football and basketball themed bins to encourage pupils to dispose of their litter in a fun way. In order to fund both social enterprises, the P7s organised and ran a virtual event for the rest of the school, they had a variety of activities with ‘something for everyone’ from crafts to comedy!

Inverness High School’s enterprise group The Edge have been busy this year and alongside their enterprises based on the school farm, they created an upcycling company called Highland Driftwood. They helped to keep everyone organised by making beach themed hooks for keys, coats and dog leads using beach glass, driftwood and shells. Once again, delicious produce from the school farm polytunnels has been sold with profits going towards sustaining the farm and the sale of daffodils this spring were donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Inverness High School’s Citizenship Group enjoyed on-line workshops with our tutor, Anne Martin, and before lockdown visited a local Social Enterprise called ‘The Sheiling Project’ where they cooked pitta bread in a pizza oven and weaved willow baskets! The Citizenship Group spent time identifying several issues they wanted to tackle and were able to create a video with Eden Court’s digital team, telling us all about their learning.

Running the S7 Eleven tuck shop, this small group of pupils have already achieved so much. They initially began with identifying that they would like to improve their outdoor space. In the past, their school was known for going out into the community for fun activities and then suddenly COVID happened and they couldn’t go anywhere. Whilst being grateful to have an outdoor space they decided that they wanted to create an area with seats and tables to be able to sit with friends and chat. Using the profits from their tuck shop, they will continue to buy more stock and then continue to sell at a profit until eventually they will have enough money to buy the materials needed to make their own wooden furniture with the help of senior CDT pupils. Hoping to make their social enterprise sustainable they plan to train younger pupils to run the tuck shop and hope to further develop that into potentially a school shop in the future.

The Green Gang and the Never Give Up Group have been working hard to raise funds to continue to support the local food pantry. Linking with the Sustainable Global Goals, Rights Respecting Schools and Learning for Sustainability, they have made face masks to respond to COVID in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Their reusable face masks have not only been modelled by the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon but are reducing the amount of plastic ones being thrown away. As well as selling their masks, they have also made and sold Christmas cards to raise money to support their community whilst also actively continuing to collect for their local Community Food Larder.

Choosing to help people in poverty and young carers who have in particular really struggled during and as a result of difficulties related to COVID over the past year, this group of young people identified that they would really like to help make people’s Christmases special, especially given the recent difficult times. Working together, they made Santa Sleighs, they designed and made a prototype, budgeted what they would need and sourced donations to keep costs down. Receiving 250 orders in just over 1 week, the group worked hard to make sleighs, organise sales, gather funds, purchase resources, package and deliver, all in a COVID safe way. The money they made was donated to the Angus Toy Appeal and Dundee Coat Appeal, but was also used to give gifts to a number of young carers within Monifieth High and wrapped toy gifts to local primary schools identified families with loss or financial difficulties. Continuing to adapt, react and think of ways to support the rest of the school community, they also created a COVID blues play list to share with teachers and pupils, including uplifting and happy music for them to listen to during the period of online learning. This group of Community Champions have had such a valuable and worthwhile impact on their peers, their school and their community.

Primary 6/7 decided that they wanted to help children who have been diagnosed with cancer as well as children who have someone in their family who has cancer. To do this, they created a social enterprise called, ‘Find your Smile’ which creates and gives away Boxes of Smiles – these boxes are filled with lots of goodies to help put a smile on a child’s face. Forming a partnership with Tayside Children with Cancer and Leukaemia (TCCL) enabled them to distribute their boxes to those that need them most.
