The materials we need to do the experiment are:

  • Alcohol
  • Tin
  • Water
  • A small candle
  • Oil
  • A glass jar
  • A highlighter
  • A lighter
  • A glass

  • To observe the result of a chemical reaction.
  • To achieve a relaxing effect through an experiment.

To do this experiment, you have to follow the next steps:

  1. We pour alcohol into our glass bottle.
  2. Then, we add a couple of drops of oil.
  3. Next, we are going to prepare a mixture with water and the highlighter. When we have this ready, we have to put it in the pot.
  4. We let it pass for a few minutes until all the bubbles disappear.
  5. Finally, we put the candle in the tuna tin and place the lamp on the top.

This reaction occurs because when adding the alcohol then the oil, the alcohol stays on top because the density of the alcohol is much less than the density of the oil. When we add the water, the alcohol is diluted in it, making the density of the mixture just a little lower than that of the oil so it will stay on top. When we extinguish the candle the density of the mixture decreases and begins to rise through the oil. Once it is at the top it cools down and goes down again. It's like an eternal cycle.

If we had used vegetable oil the effect would be much better
