We use the reported speech when we want to repeat what someone has said previously.

Mark answered he was fine.
Lucy suggested they could go to the cinema that afternoon.
Mark replied that that was a great idea.
Direct speech
Lucy: Hello, how are you?
Mark: I am fine.
Lucy: We can go to the cinema this afternoon.
Mark: That's a great idea
Reporting verbs
The most used reported verbs are TELL and SAY. However, there are other verbs that tell us more accurately the intentions of the speaker.

How to change a sentence from direct speech to reported speech
Step 1
Identify who is talking. This person will be the subject of our reported speech sentence.
Step 2
Use the correct reporting verb.
Step 3
Change the tense of the verb to the correct tense. If there is anything else we need to change (time expressions, pronouns) we also do it.
Mary: I can't believe it is Tuesday

When we report a question, we change the word order so that it reflects the structure of an affirmative sentence. We don’t use the auxiliary do / did in reported questions.We also change tenses and references to times, places and people in the same way as in statements.
