WARM-UP ACTIVITY
HOW WOULD YOU EXPRESS THIS CONVERSATION?
DIRECT SPEECH
"Do you want to explain this note from your teacher?" asked Father Crocodile angrily. Son Crocodile replied, "It is not my fault! Ms. Rabbit just does not like me." Father Crocodile commented, "She says you keep trying to eat her!" "Ok, may be it is little bit my fault," admitted Son Crocodile.
REPORTED SPEECH
Father Crocodile angrily asked if his son wanted to explain that note from his teacher. Son Crocodile replied that it was not his fault, and that Ms. Rabbit just did not like him. Father Crocodile commented that his teacher said Son Crocodile kept trying to eat her. Son Crocodile admitted that it was a little bit his fault.
Objective:
To change the sentences from direct speech to indirect speech / reported speech
WHAT IS REPORTED SPEECH AND WHEN DO WE USE IT?
+ when
REPORTED SPEECH
is speech which tells you what someone said, but does not use the actual words spoken. We use it when we want to tell another person about a conversation that took place in the past.
+ example
When we want to tell someone what someone else said, there are two ways of doing so.
You can repeat that person’s words (direct speech).
You can use reported speech.
Please note that
Quotation marks are not used in reported speech.
Verb tenses, pronouns and some 'time' and 'place' words may change because the time, place and speaker may be different.
When we report a statement, we use reported verbs such as say, tell, explain, inform, answer, decide, etc. often followed by the word ‘that’.
Watch the video explaining the verb tense changes, and be prepared to answer the questions.
