The Panama Canal was one of the world's greatest engineering achievements. Canals transport ships over land which is especially important for the Panama canal. Without it, the ships would have to go all the way around the southern tip of South America. It was built in 1914 and took $380 million USD to build. The canal now handles more than 13,000 ships a year from around 70 nations carrying 168 million short tons of cargo.
