The hippocampus even appears in Homeric poems as a symbol of Poseidon, whose chariot plowed through the sea pulled by fast horses. Later poets and artists conceived and depicted the horses of Poseidon and other marine divinities as a combination of horse and fish. According to the descriptions, they were up to 5 meters long, enough to carry many sea creatures at the same time.

Species share the following characteristics:

• Head at an angle to the body.
• A deep compressed adomen.
• A well-defined flexible neck.
• A prehensile tail without a caudal fin.
• The dorsal fin much closer to the head than to the top of the tail.
• A coronet or the group of spines on top of the head.
