HISTORY
When were found the first records of chewing gum
First Records
- In the American Continent, by Mayans and Aztecs in the years from 2621 b.C to 1021 a.C, people would chew Sapoti latex (chicle);
- In Europe, 2500 years ago the mastic tree gum resin was chewed by the Greeks;
- In Finland, Sarah Pickin found in 2007 birch tree bark with human teeth marks at an archeological site, dated from 6000 years ago.

Gum Precursors
- In the USA, in 1848, John Curtis commercialized the first pack of chewing gum
- Then, from 1860 to 1870, Thomas Adams Junior made the first batch of flavoured ball gum with Sapoti resin and aromatized it with licorice
Things you might not know about chewing gum
Curiosities
- In the 20th century the natural resin was switched for refined oil becouse the price is cheaper;
- In 1960 the sugar-free gum was invented to avoid dental caries and to freshen up breath;
- Chewing gum is originally vibrant pink because it was the only food colouring that Adams had in hands.
