The Organ
INFOGRAPHIC
Most organs in Europe, North/South America, and Australasia can be found in Christian churches and the introduction of church organs is traditionally attributed to Pope Vitalian in the 7th century.
The organ is a hybrid, a combination wind instrument and keyboard instrument. It's a wind instrument because it produces sound by means of air vibrating in pipes.
The word organ is derived from the Ancient Greek ὄργανον (órganon), a generic term for an instrument or a tool, via the Latin organum, an instrument similar to a portative organ used in ancient Roman circus games. The Greek engineer Ctesibius of Alexandria is credited with inventing the organ in the 3rd century BC.
In music, the organ is a keyboard instrument of one or more pipe divisions or other means for producing tones, each played with its own keyboard, played either with the hands-on a keyboard or with the feet using pedals.
