The Vietnam timeline

Invasion of Cambodia

This event occurred on May 4, 1970. After the protest on campus, a student decided to burn down the ROTC building. This would result in fire opening from those opposed on campus. This occurred in Ohio.

A failure on the United States' behalf in which civilian men, women, and children were killed. A village of believed 500 people were all massacred in Vietnam. It took place in Sơn Tịnh District, South Vietnam, on March 16, 1968. The government would try to cover this incident up to continue to appear "in command" of the war still.

Tonkin Resolution allowed Johnson to make more war decisions with less need for congressional approval. This was done under the conception that we were winning the war. Though this would be later taken back, Johnson was then able to make many more choices single-handedly about the war. This was passed by congress.

As previously stated, this war would end in French Defeat. The Indochina war would end August 1, 1954. There were many reasons why the French lost the war, Including; political, military, diplomatic, economic and socio-cultural factors. This would lead to the new era of vietman. It would then move into South and North Vietnam respectively.

These were a series of documents released from the Geneva Conference. Many countries were in attendance, including but not limited to; China, France, Laos, the United Kingdom, the United States, the Soviet Union, the Viet Minh (i.e., the North Vietnamese), etc. These meetings served to try and fix the issues of the Korean war, and the first Indochina war. It took place in Geneva, Switzerland. Though many decisions and plans would be made through this meeting, a key note would be the following: Vietnam would become an independent nation, ending 75 years of French reign.

The first Indochina war began in French Indochina on December 19, 1946. This battle would then last until July 20, 1954. This battle was fought between the French and Viet Minh (Vietnamese Communist and nationalist). It was fought in hopes of control of a small mountain outpost on the Vietnamese border. The French would end up in defeat.

After outsing the French, Vietnam would watch as the Japanese surrendered to the allied powers. After this, Vietnam leader Ho Chi Minh would raise the confidence to declare Vietnam's independence. This is after the Vietnamese had been controlled by a number of nations. He even said his speech with notes from the Declaration of Independence.

The Vietnam war

Conflict in Indochina during the cold war between North and South Vietnam and its principle ally, The United States

The capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, was captured by the People's Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cong on 30 April 1975. Congress denied going back to war in Vietnam. The United States claimed that as far as we were concerned, our war in Vietnam was over.

The War Powers Resolution requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action. This was passed by Congress after the bill allowing Johnson more freedom without Congress's approval during the war. This was another effort to prevent such tragedies from re-occurring.

This was a peace treaty signed to end the war in Vietnam. It was reached after a heavy rain down from the United States through bombings. The United States put incredible pressure on the North Vietnamese to agree to peace talks. This was out of desperation to leave the war. It was signed on January 27, 1973. It was signed in Paris, hence the name.

The Pentagon Papers, which was officially titled "Report of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Vietnam Task Force", detailed the history of the U.S. in Vietnam. They were released in June of 1971. This was a complete overview of the involvement of the United States in Vietnam.
