ASSESSMENT WRITING
WHAT IS IT?
Answering a question using a formal layout and structure.
- Writing critically
- Using supporting material
- Using academic language
WHY DO I NEED TO DO IT?
- It will help you cement the knowledge that you have learnt
- It is a way to access learning
- It helps you to link all your ideas together
HOW DO I DO IT?WHERE TO START...
Essay Structure
Essays have three main components:
- Introduction Say what you are going to say
- Body Say it
- Conclusion And say it again
Introduction
- Outline what you need to say
- Provide a general statement
- Outline your thesis statement
- Identify your main points
Body
- Topic Sentence: Summarise the main idea of the paragraph.
- Evidence: Support your argument with evidence and examples found from your research.
- Analysis: What is the significance/ impact of the evidence/ examples on your idea.
- Concluding Sentence: Summarise the idea of the paragraph and use a linking sentence to begin the next paragraph.
Conclusion
- Restate the thesis
- Provide a summary of the main points
- Provide a final comment and any future recommendations/ identify any future implications.
- Challenge traditions, societal standards, and expectations
- Approach problems from multiple perspectives
- Uses sound logic and reasoning skills in arguments
- Can identify logical fallacies
- Identifies personal biases and their impact
Critical Thinking
A deeper level of thinking, that requires you to be discerning. You will need to analyse, question, and evaluate information that you encounter and not take ideas at face value. You require critical thinking to inform good decision making.
Critical Thinking
Look at the source material and think:
- Who wrote this?
- What context did they write it in?
- How does it fit with the broader industry thinking?
- What do I think about this issue?
- Do I agree / disagree?
