TERMITY Termity wznoszą ogromne budowle sięgające nawet do ośmiu metrów wysokości. Jest to mieszkanie dla paru milionów termitów. Wewnątrz temitiera jest klimatyzowana, by termity mogły tam żyć i pracować. Są one ciepłolubne i wilgociolubne. Termitiera składa się ze złożonego labiryntu komór, szybów i korytarzy. Piętra połączone są pochylniami, dzięki czemu drogi są krótkie. Skorupa zewnętrzna może mieć grubość nawet 60 cm. Materiał do jej budowy to wytwarzana przez termity mieszanka składająca się z ziaren piachu, ziemi oraz niewielkich cząsteczek drewna. Spoiwem jest ślina lub odchody (zależy od gatunku termitów). Za pomocą nóg i narządów gębowych termity formują nieduże bryłki, które pozostawiają do wyschnięcia, by nabrały twardości. Do budowy przeciętnej termitiery owady ważące kilka miligramów zużywają około 50 ton ziemi (to waga 10 SŁONI). źródło: M.
