SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN: Lain Iwakura, an awkward and introverted fourteen-year-old, is one of the many girls from her school to receive a disturbing email from her classmate Chisa Yomoda—the very same Chisa who recently committed suicide. Lain's life is turned upside down as she begins to encounter cryptic mysteries one after another. Strange men called the Men in Black begin to appear wherever she goes, asking her questions and somehow knowing more about her than even she herself knows. With the boundaries between reality and cyberspace rapidly blurring, Lain is plunged into more surreal and bizarre events where identity, consciousness, and perception are concepts that take on new meanings. Be wary, this show is very mind boggling. Available on Apple TV+

GANTZ: When Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato die in a horrendous train accident, they find themselves part of a strange new game played by other recently-deceased individuals. Armed with futuristic weapons and items, they must hunt down and kill aliens as directed by an enormous black sphere named "Gantz." Their goal is to reach 100 points by following Gantz's rules, and by the end of it all, it's possible they may be able to return to their normal lives. Gantz is one of the most gruesome and disturbing anime series out there, and features some especially distressing scenes. Available on Funimation.

DEADMAN WONDERLAND:A young man named Ganta Igarashi is attending middle school when a strange figure covered in blood floats through his classroom window. In seconds, this so-called "Red Man" destroys Ganta's entire class. Ganta is spared, but receives a strange red crystal shard from the Red Man embedded in his chest. Unfortunately, Ganta is blamed for the massacre and sentenced to live out his days at the theme park-like prison Deadman Wonderland. While there, he's forced to eke out an existence as a "Deadman," a prisoner tasked with entertaining visitors. Realizing he has a new power over his own blood called a "Branch of Sin," he's determined to figure out how to break out—all the while facing off against dozens of other Deadmen, each with their own horrific powers.Available on Funimation

ERGO PROXY: Within the domed city of Romdo lies one of the last human civilizations on Earth. Thousands of years ago, a global ecological catastrophe doomed the planet; now, life outside these domes is virtually impossible. To aid in mankind's recovery, humanoid-like robots called AutoReivs have been created to assist people in their day-to-day lives. However, AutoReivs have begun contracting an enigmatic disease called the "Cogito Virus" which grants them self-awareness. Re-l Mayer, granddaughter of Romdo's ruler, is assigned to investigate this phenomenon alongside her AutoReiv partner Iggy. But what begins as a routine investigation quickly spirals into a conspiracy as Re-l is confronted by humanity's darkest sins. If you think their names are weird, I assure you the show itself is weirder. Have fun! Available on Hulu, Amazon Prime and Apple TV+

FUTURE DIARY: Lonely high school student, Yukiteru Amano, spends his days writing a diary on his cellphone, while conversing with his two seemingly imaginary friends Deus, who is the god of time and space, and Murmur, the god's servant. Revealing himself to be an actual entity, Deus grants Yukiteru a "Random Diary," which shows highly descriptive entries based on the future and forces him into a bloody battle royale with 11 other holders of similarly powerful future diaries. With the last person standing designated as the new god of time and space, Yukiteru must find and kill the other 11 in order to survive. He reluctantly teams up with his obsessive stalker Yuno Gasai (who also possesses such a diary), and she takes it upon herself to ensure his safety. But there's more to the girl than meets the eye. Its absolutely crazy but worth the watch. Available on Hulu

BLOOD C: Peaceful schoolgirl by day, fearsome monster slayer by night, Saya Kisaragi is leading a split life. Equipped with a ceremonial sword given to her by her father for sacred tasks, she vanquishes every monster who dares threaten her quiet little village. But all too soon, Saya's reality and everything she believes to be true is tested, when she overhears the monsters speak of a broken covenant—something she knows nothing about. And then, unexpectedly, a strange dog appears; it asks her to whom she promised to protect the village, curious as to what would happen if she were to break that promise. Tormented by unexplainable visions and her world unraveling around her, we travel with Saya through her struggle to find a way to the truth in a village where nothing is as it seems. This is by far the show with the most gore, so be prepared. Available on Hulu and Funimation

PARASYTE: THE MAXIM A bizarre alien race decides to infiltrate humanity by taking human forms. After one of the alien representatives falls to Earth, protagonist Shinichi Izumi loses his hand to one of the parasitic shapeshifters. The alien is off-target after trying to get into Shinichi's brain, and remains content with only staying in his left hand. The pair form something of a symbiotic relationship as they work together to kill off the other parasitic beings around them. Get ready to see some really weird gore, like one human's face opening up to chow down on another. Available on Netflix, Hulu and Crunchyroll

TERROR IN RESONANCE: From the creator of Cowboy Bebop! comes Terror in Resonance. After a shocking terrorist attack on a nuclear power plant, the Japanese government is shattered by their inability to act, and the police are left frantically searching for ways to crack down the perpetrators. The public are clueless—until, six months later, a strange video makes its way onto the internet. In it, two teenage boys who identify themselves only as "Sphinx" directly challenge the police, threatening to cause destruction and mayhem across Tokyo. Terror in Resonance the story of Nine and Twelve, the two boys behind the masked figures of Sphinx. They should not exist, yet they stand strong in a world of deception and secrets while they make the city fall around them, all in the hopes of burying their own tragic truth. Similar to Death Note, the main characters are antagonists and completely psychotic. Strap in! Available on Hulu and Funimation
