Our earth exists only once in this universe. So far it is the only known planet that has life, and we treat this earth like we would have three or four of it.We think about how we can survive on Mars instead of how we can save our earth. We need this earth, but for sure - the earth does not need us humans!

I have no country to fight for, my country is the earth. And I am a citizen of this world!Eugene V. Debs

Here you will find out 20 things how YOU can help to save the earth!

  • When you leave a room, turn off the lights!
  • Always turn off the TV completely, do not use standby mode!
  • This also applies to the radio, computer, tablet, alarm clock and other electronic devices. Electricity is also consumed in stand-by mode.
  • Say goodbye to light bulbs or halogen lamps, they use far too much electricity. Use LED lamps!

Number 1: SAVE ELECTRICITY!

When electricity is produced, carbon dioxide is produced. It's a gas, it's also called CO². If there is too much of this gas in our air, then it harms animals and humans. If you save electricity, less CO² is thrown into our atmosphere, so you protect the environment!

What brings less power consumption?

On the last Saturday in March, the lights go out for an hour in many cities around the world. Can you explain why? The environmental organization WWF calls for "Earth Hour" every year and asks people to turn off the electricity in their homes for an hour. In 2020, 190 states took part and turned off their lights for an hour!

Earth Hour!

You are an electricity detective! Uncover!

Always turning up the heating in the house is not cool! It doesn't hurt if you wear socks and a sweater in the house. You shouldn't be cold, but neither should you sweat. The ideal temperature in your room is 23 ° Celsius. Try it out! At night when sleeping, the temperature can be even lower, between 18 ° -20 ° Celsius. It's much healthier and you sleep better, too! Try that as soon as possible!

Number 2: Dress warmly

Ruby is a great girl who loves to decipher codes. Even when she gets dresses, she always follows the same algorithm. Would you like to help her?

  • Don't let the water run while you brush your teeth!
  • Take a shower instead of a bath!
  • Shower for less than 5 minutes!
  • While you are soaping yourself, turn off the water or at least turn the tap on very slightly!

Number 3: Use water sparingly!

  • 3 liters for cooking and drinking per day
  • 7 liters for washing dishes
  • 7 liters for cleaning
  • 5 - 10 liters for daily body care
  • 20-40 liters for showering
  • 30 liters for laundry
  • 40 liters for flushing the toilet every day

Your average water consumption!

Do not turn on the dishwasher and washing machine until they are full. Make your parents aware that this is an important contribution to our earth!

We need a lot of water for clean laundry and clean dishes! Do not waste too much water by washing dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. The dishwasher uses less water than hand washing. BUT it uses electricity for this, so make a note of:

Laundry and dishes

  • Pack your sandwiches for school in a snack box, avoid plastic bags or even aluminum foil!
  • Take your drink with you in a bottle that you can use again and again, don't buy single-use plastic bottles, or worse, soda cans!
  • In the supermarket you can buy bags for fruit and vegetables that you can use quite often, so you save plastic bags!
  • Always choose those products that generate less waste: Use a bar of chocolate and not many small chocolate bonbons that are all specially wrapped!
  • Think about it with friends: Can you think of something else?

Number 4: Avoid Waste!

Number 5: If there is waste, separate it carefully!

Number 6: Stop plastic!

  • Don't always print everything out!
  • Always use both sides of the same paper.
  • If paper is only written on on one side, use the second side as a scrap.
  • Ask your parents if all of the advertising in the mailbox is needed. If not, you can put a sticker on the mailbox with the inscription: "Please no advertising"!

Number 7: Save paper, save the forest!

  • Have you heard of "recycling"? This is an English word and means in German: "Recycling". Recycled paper is made from old paper, so no trees have to be felled. Such paper is marked with a blue angel or an ÖKAPAplus environmental label. There are already more labels as more and more paper is made from waste paper.
  • Tip: If a paper says “wood-free”, then the paper was made from wood, but the wood particles were removed with the help of chemicals. For the sake of the environment, you shouldn't buy this paper!

Use recycled paper!

This is how old paper becomes new again!

Check out the journey of a simple t-shirt here. Many people are busy growing and harvesting cotton. they have to use a lot of chemicals to harvest as much cotton as possible and this is damaging our environment. Please consider whether it is really necessary to buy all the clothes that you have in your wardrobe, or maybe you and your friends can change clothes? It is funny!Buy fewer new things, but if you do buy clothes that are made to be less damaging to the environment and for which the people who make them are properly paid.

Number 8: Swap clothes, not buy them!

Watch the video first and then relive your t-shirt's journey on Scratch! Answer the questions correctly. Have fun!

  • Many children travel with their parents on vacation. But such a trip doesn't always have to take place by plane. Airplanes are not only noisy, they are also very harmful to our environment.
  • Talk to your parents about whether you can also travel by train.
  • Stay at home and go on vacation in your own country. It offers many great opportunities!

Number 9: Travelling and environment!

If you like geocatching and you want more, you will find great apps here!

Do you know geo catching? A great treasure hunt for the whole family!

  • It takes 15,500 liters of water until one kilogram of meat endsup on your table as a Sunday roast. That is more water than you need to shower in a whole year. You will not believe this?
  • The animals need water to drink and the plants they eat need water to grow.
  • For comparison: only 131 liters of water are required to produce one kilogram of carrots.
  • You don't have to become a vegetarian right away, but it is much healthier for you to only eat meat two or three times a week.

Number 10: Eat less meat and sausage!

Have you seen this picture before? It was published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and a similar question is asked: What do a car, a big city in Japan and a puffing cow have in common? They harm the environment. Cows emit methane when burping and puffing. This gas is produced when the cows digest their food. This gas is harmful to our climate!

What do a car and a cow have in common??

  • We grow strawberries in summer. But you can also buy strawberries in the supermarket in winter. They come from distant countries and are usually brought by plane or ship. The next time you go shopping, consider whether you really need to buy fruit and vegetables that have already come a long way.
  • Rather, buy vegetables and fruits from your own country that are just ripe. You are also helping the farmers and the economy in your home country. Each country has plenty of excellent fruit! And it is fresh because it has just been harvested!

Number 11: Buy fruits and vegetables from your region!

This number provides information about the manufacturer.

AT means the egg comes from Austria. AT stands for Austria!

The number tells you how the chickens are kept. Number 3 would be caged. This keeping is forbidden in Europe, but you can often find eggs with the number 3.Number 2 would be barn eggs. Again, the chickens are not doing very well.Number 1 means the chickens are kept outdoors and number 0 means that they are also got organic feed. It's best for you and the environment to buy eggs with the numbers 1 and 0!

Number 12: Not all eggs are the same!

Here is a quiz for you! Have fun!

Eat a healthy diet and take care of the environment!

Obviously, being driven by car is much more convenient. Why should you walk? Why take the school bus? Why go by bike?Mom and Dad can take you anywhere by car.B U T Is that really necessary? Scientists have calculated that half of all car journeys are less than 5 kilometers. You are faster by bike or bus - AND you are helping the earth!

Number 13: Go on foot!

The washing machine consumes electricity and a lot of water. So don't give your clothes to wash until they're dirty. There's no need to wash your shirt straight away because of a small stain or wrinkles. Ask your parents not to turn on the washing machine until it is full. This also saves your parents money and protects the environment!

Number 14: It doesn't always have to be ultra clean!

That sounds a little strange, but what it means is that we should all pay attention to WHERE the things we buy come from AND WHETHER the people who made these goods are fairly paid and can work under fair conditions. You should know that already that there is a label that you and your parents should really pay attention to! You can find examples on the next page. Have you ever seen such labels in the supermarket?

Number 15: Stay fair when shopping!

Who doesn't like to eat ice cream? You should also enjoy every ice cream, but think about the packaging: the best and tastiest packaging for your ice cream is the waffle. You can just eat it, you don't have to wash anything afterwards and it doesn't make any garbage. You don't like ice cream cones? In some ice cream shops you can get cups that you can put on the compost!

Number 16: Ice cream, but with a waffle please!

Bees are extremely useful animals, and not just because they give us honey. When they collect the nectar, they climb into the flowers of the plants and pollinate them so that fruits and new plants can emerge. As there are fewer and fewer flower meadows, the bees' habitat is being destroyed.Don't pick flowers, bees and butterflies need them. They need the catkins especially in spring, so do without the palm branches in the living room. If you have a garden, ask your parents not to mow the lawn in a small corner, but to sow wild flowers for the bees.

Number 17: Save the bees!

If you still have a flash player, you can play this game here too. You have to help the bee fly into its hive! Have fun!

Fly, bee, fly!

We all know that water is the best drink when we are thursty. Cola, Fanta, Sprite, iced tea and other drinks contain a lot of sugar. In some countries you can drink the water straight from the tap. So remember, it doesn't always have to be something sweet, water also tastes good. And if you like sparkling water, there are devices that turn your tap water into soda water. It's cheaper than buying bottled water and your parents don't have to carry heavy bottles!

Number 18: Cheers to our well-being!

Watch the video to see how much sugar you are drinking when you use different juices!

Are you one of those children who always leave a little bit of food on the plate? Two or three bites of your snack always stay on the plate and are thrown away, They land in the trash. Or may be you are one of those kids that open a chocolate, eat a little and then on the next day you mean it tastes no longer good? You try a new sort of cookies, you eat just one because you don't like the taste. The rest will be thrown away. Often the best-before date for groceries at home expires and these too go into the trash, often without opening them, along with the entire packaging. It is estimated that 11 million tons of groceries are thrown away every year, although many of them are not yet gone bad.

Number 19: „No, I don't eat that anymore!“

There are many ways to take care of a piece of nature, here are just a few examples: The rubbish on the meadow behind the bus stop is increasing. Do something about it! Empty cans are always lying around at the tree house at the playground. Do something about it! The backyard looks more like a garbage dump. Do something about it!

Number 20: Take responsibility! Take care of a piece of nature!

It will certainly not only make you happy, but also some animals and other people AND our earth, which urgently needs such places!

You can also do this task as a partner exercise. Think about what you could do. Go through the world with open eyes and look for a little piece of nature that needs your help. You will surely find a little part of nature, soon. Take care of it, keep this place clean, maybe plant a few flowers and you will be amazed what can become of this place.

Declare yourself responsible for a piece of earth and keep it clean!
