Endangered species

in Poland

Gray wolf

Canis lupus

There are only about 2000 wolves in Poland, their population is growing but it used to be bigger.

Wolves provide balance in the forest ecosystem, they are extremely intelligent and caring for their families.

How can we help?

You can symbolically adopt a wolf by donating money to WWF Poland, every participant gets his own certificate.

In Poland there are only 110 brown bears, their population is so small because of hunters and uneducated people.

Bears are not only eating meat - they are much more likely to eat plant food! Good sense of smell helps them find nourishment.

They can smell trash that tourists leave in the forest, it's really unhealthy for them to eat the waste!

How can we help?

Do not leave garbage in the woods

Respect the bear territory

There are only about 200 speciesof European Wildcats left inPoland.

They are living in the Eastern Poland, near the mountains Karpaty.

European Wildcat

European wildcats live off of, for example, mammals, rodents, birds, or frogs.

Grey seal

Halichoerus Grypus

At the dawn of the 20th century, the Grey seal population in the Baltic Sea has reached 100 000, however in 1940, that number has been reduced to 20 000. Luckily a portion of its population has been restored in recent years, however they are still considered endangered.

"Explore Live Nature Cams" hosts livestreams in order to observe behaviours of various animals. Their "Gray Seal Pupping cam" livestream has been transmitted since October 2020, and it's purpose is to showcase the Gray Seal's birth process.

HELCOM and ICES made important steps in order to prevent seals extinction, there are facilities that exist in order to help this specie survive and regrow to its former numbers.

Grey seals were recognized as "in high risk of extinction"

There are two species of them in Poland; one residing North East part of the country, and the other living in the South.

Eurasian Lynx

There is an alarming amount of Lynxes in Poland - only about 200 are left roaming around.

The main threaths to the Eurasian Lynx are hunting and habitat loss. Although the population has benefitted from the ban on legal international fur trade, illegal hunting still represents a major threat.

Eurasian Pygmy Owl

Glaucidum Passerinum

In 2003 it was estimated that around 400 pairs of Eurasian Pygmy Owls remained in Poland. However due to lack of evidence at the time that number was significantly lowered. Now, it is believed that the Eurasian Pygmy Owl population reached 1000-1500 pairs.

Eurasian Pygmy Owl is recognised as a "Least Concern" species. Despite that, there is a looming threat of depopulation of these creatures, due to the continuous deforestation.

It is said that while flying, an Eurasian Pygmy Owl can reminisce a Starling.

They don't hunt at night, pygmy owl is a daytime animal

Mouse-eared Bat

The population started decreasing in 1997 and it's getting smaller with every year.

They consume around 50% of their total body weight in one night.

Why should we care ?

How humans have contributed to their extinction?

Bats usually die when woken up from hibernation, so any nearby constructions or hiking expeditions are a death sentence for them.

Those cute little creatures are very good at controlling the pest population.

Tatra Chamois

They live in national parks in Poland and Slovakia.

Just casually eating some grass

Tatra Chamois is listed as Critically Endangered.

Their total population is only about 1300, but it's been on the rise for the past few years.

The biggest problem for their species is illegal hunting.

There are special laws that were made just for them.

World Hunger

And how it's rising

About 790 million people are going to be hungry and many more are severely malnourished; the number has been growing since 2014.

If it continues, it’ll exceed 840 million by 2030

countries with the biggest hunger rate

What's interesting, there is more than enough food produced in the world to feed everyone on the planet,

but economic growth doesn’t neccessarily mean better nourishment for all

How can we help?

Our school gathered food for Caritas, to support the Elizabethan monastery in helping people in need.

Elizabethan sisters are preparing free meals for those who can't afford food.

Caritas Bar Volunteers are helping the homeless and elderly so they can stay well-nourished.

Thanks!
