Modal perfect and progressive tenses
- John never called you last night? He must have been working late.
- Gloria may have torn her wedding dress.
- They had a lot of work and little time. They can't have finished everything.
will, may, shall, must, can + have + V3
is used when it is unknown if the subject performed an action prior to some designated point in its future OR past, but it’s possible, necessary or likely that the subject will or did.
Present modal perfect tense
- I don't know. It might have been different if you were there.
- If it hadn't stopped raining, it could have been a disaster.
- I told you, you should have studied more!
- This house of cards would have fallen over if the person who built it hadn’t been so careful.
could, should, would, might + have + V3
is used when it is unknown if the subject performed an action in the past, but it’s possible, necessary, or likely.
Past modal perfect tense
- The medical treatment must be working. She's getting better.
- This is an old address. He may not be living there anymore.
- Her eyes can be stinging from the smoke.
- The audience will be sneering at his corny jokes.
- He shall be demonstrating proper first aid for sprains.
