Carnival in Italy
- In ancient times Carnival was associated to the fertility of the earth or celebrations in honor of the coming of Spring.
- It has roots in pagan festivals and traditions from ancient Greece and Rome but it was adapted to fit into the Catholic rituals.
- The Italian word Carnevale comes from the Latin "carnem levare" (= take meat away) and it refers to the period of Lent, when no meat was eaten by the Christians. Then it became “carne vale” (goodbye, meat!)
- It ends with the Christian celebration of Lent (40 days before Easter) on Shrove Tuesday (Martedì Grasso), the day before Ash Wednesday (when people stop eating meat).

Every year hundreds of people wear original hand-made costumes and parade through the streets of our town. Parades are accompanied by music and dances. Local schools parade too!
It all began in 1940s with a Sicilian comedy play called «a’ Mascara» (=the mask), where people wore costumes while acting in Sicilian dialect.
Misterbianco Carnival is known for its magnificent parades of the most beautiful costumes of Sicily.
