What is expected from citations in a paper or publication?
Citation Styles used for writing papers usually call for an in-text citation in the body of the paper and a full citation in a references/bibliography area.
Citations are like a map. They give you directions about where to go.

In-Text Citation
- Usually at the end of the article in an alphabetical or numerical reference list.
- Contains all the information needed to locate the full text such as journal title, article title, date and volume published.
- May also be in footnotes.(Chicago Style)
- In the paper next to the information being cited.
- Can be a number1 (AMA style)
- Can be other information like author's last name and date (APA style/MLA style)
- The in-text citation tells the reader where to find the full citation in the reference list.
- Defense against plagiarism.
Common Parts of a CitationAuthor: Rules may change depending on how many authors there are.Date Published: Year or full date depending on source type.Article Title/Chapter Title (if only citing a chapter)/Web Section Title.Journal Title/Book Title/Web Page Title: Journal titles may require abbreviation.Volume & Issue Number: For journals.DOI=Digital Object Identifer: For Online Resources like ejournals or ebook chapters.URL: For web pages.Location of Publication & Publisher: Some styles require this for books.

Each citation style has its own rules about what information to include and how to include it. It's important to consult a reliable citation guide while creating citations even if you are using a citation generator like Mendeley, Word...etc.

This section will offer an overview of characteristics of the citation styles. You should be able to recognize the important parts of a citation in order to track down an original source. Online guides will be provided on how to create citations from scratch. It is recommended that you bookmark them for reference when it comes time for you to create citations. The best way to learn citations is to create citations. It's important to double check your citations, even when using a citation generator, to make sure the format is right and the citation contains all the necessary information.
