Foton Arts - Visual Arts Joining Foton is the first step in improving your photography and design skills. Foton offers non-mandatory evenings full of practice and instructions, access to their darkroom and studio with a lot of equipment, photoshop lessons, readings and workshops of professional photographers, day and weekend trips and of course a lot of other social activities. Not only does Foton focus on photography, but they also have a visual arts group that organizes weekly activities about painting, drawing, sculpting, origami, calligraphy, graphic design and more. Studenten Harmonie Orkest Twente - Wind Orchestra The Student Wind Orchestra Twente, also known as SHOT, consists of a little over 60 students from the University of Twente, Saxion and ArtEZ. At least twice a year the orchestra gives a concert in Enschede or another city. Besides this, the orchestra visits international music festivals abroad every two years. Festivals in Finland, Austria, Switzerland and Spain have already been visited. Bellettrie - Student Library Bellettrie is a library by students, for students. Aside from renting books, the Bellettrie also provides a room filled with comfortable chairs and couches to sit down with a book and a cup of coffee or tea or hang out with fellow booklovers. Every week the Bellettrie hosts writing evenings for aspiring writers to work on their stories, brainstorm, and motivate one another. Arabesque - Modern Dance Arabesque is a modern dance production group for students in Enschede, mainly from UTwente and Saxion. In the technical and choreography lessons you can learn modern dance techniques and how to create choreographies. At the moment, there are 3 different groups, classified per level from no experience to advanced. The lessons are taught in English. Arabesque organizes an annual major performance with dances made by teachers and members. Vocal Group Musilon - Vocal Group Musilon is the student Vocal Group of the University of Twente. Since 1987 they sing jazz, rock and pop, both acapella and accompanied, with a lot of enthusiasm. Since then, Musilon has grown to about 45 members. Every year, they have at least two concerts, often in June and in December. They also regularly participate in choir festivals in Enschede and Hengelo. Balfolk - Folk Dance Balfolk is a dance form that consists of a collection of Western European dances. Such a Balfolk dance evening is usually called a ball. A ball can be compared to a tango or salsa evening, but with Western European music instead of South American. There are couples dances, such as Scottish, Polka, Mazurka and Bourrée, but also group dances such as the Jig or Cercle. And there is always live music. Apollo - Cultural umbrella of the University of Twente Apollo is the cultural umbrella of the University of Twente. We represent the interest of the cultural associations and help to organize cultural events on campus. We provide advice, promotion and contacts for everything culture- and arts-related. Aided by our committees, we also organize multiple activities, such as an Open Stage, Gala and the party in the Vrijhof during the Batavierenrace. We also manage the Subsidy Fund for Culture (SFC) provided by the Student Union. Anyone organizing a cultural event can apply for a subsidy. If you ever have any questions with regards to culture on campus, don't hesitate to contact us or drop by the office. LUVANE LUVANE is a cartoonist, illustrator and graphic designer, occasionally working on audiovisual productions. His cartoons are published monthly in the University of Twente’s newspaper U-Today. LUVANE’s work has been subject to solo and group exhibitions. He made this cartoon of all the cultural associations at the University of Twente. Musica Silvestra Orkest - Symphony Orchestra The Musica Silvestra Orkest (MSO) is the student symphony orchestra of the University of Twente. Each year two programmes are studied and concluded with concerts led by their passionate conductor Peter Bogaert. The orchestra performs various kinds of programmes, ranging from symphonies and overtures to film and pop music. Additionally, the orchestra frequently accompanies choirs and soloists. Next to these weekly rehearsals, a rehearsal weekend is planned at an external location. You can find Primo Ballerino in the Vrijhof, where professional teachers teach them how to practice classical ballet. 4 happy feet - Ballroom & Salsa 4 happy feet is the student association for ballroom and salsa dancing. It was founded back in 1994 but has grown to be the largest cultural association as of this moment. The association organizes dancing lessons on several levels, but there are also free dance opportunities and (un)related fun activities. Chassé - Jazz Dance Chassé is a student association of nearly 50 members who dance every Wednesday night in the Sports Centre of the campus. The classes are given by a professional dance teacher on different levels. The classes consist of technique exercises, cardio and rehearsing choreographies for the performances. InSPE - International Student Productions Every other year, InSPE (International Student Productions Enschede) presents a collaborative project that is open for all students in Enschede. InSPE does not only include all categories of performing arts (acting, dancing, singing and orchestra) but also ‘behind the scenes’ talent, such as creative writers and composers, make-up artists, designers and makers of costumes and décor. That way, InSPE improves the bonds between cultural students all over Enschede. Some of the productions that have been done in this setting are Broadway classics “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “West Side Story”. Vrijhof Culture The Vrijhof building is the headquarter of Culture & Events, and also offers sound studios, an audio room with good acoustics, and two stage halls used for concerts and theatre performances. Culture & Events’ staff can advise you about everything concerning culture and events, including the fine art of theatrical technique. Vrijhof Culture presents activities related to arts and culture.
