EXTRA! EXTRA! MURDER AT IES MARÍA MOLINER!!! Two dead bodies have been found this morning by a staff member inside IES María Moliner. Police have confirmed that they are investigating a case of murder. Forensics place the time of the events around midnight last night. The school community is in shock, since the corpses belong to two teachers (Frida Fish and Amalio Ortiga), well-known for being two of the most strict ones among the teaching staff. At the time, there are no suspects or witnesses related to the crime. If you have any relevant information that can lead to the solving of this despicable crime, please contact Detectives Chemlock Holmes and César Watsonero. Citizen collaboration will be greatly appreciated.
After hearing the news, you go to the playground and speak about the crime with your scared classmates. Suddenly, the bell rings and, while you are going back to your classroom, you find a note on top of your desk. [Hmmm... It wasn't there before.] You are in shock, but you manage to walk up to your desk, which is located on the fourth row from right to left if you are standing where this picture was taken; and that you only have two people sitting behind you. You rush to open it before anyone else notices...
Open the envelope!
Looks like an empty envelope...or is it? Check it out!

Dear student,We are Detectives Chemlock Holmes and César Watsonero. We imagine you already know the latest news about that crime that happened in your school. We have no clue about who could have done such a thing, so we need your assistance. 'Why?', you may wonder. Well, the case is we require someone from inside the school who is intelligent and brave enough to accomplish this mission. We tried to contact your teachers -César and Chema-, but they mentioned something about being too sad after marking 1ºESO's exams. You seem to be the most suitable candidate, because your teachers describe you as bold, clever and fearless. We are concerned, since we have found a note saying that there will be more victims, so we have gathered the main suspects of these nasty crimes in the gym after class. Please, meet us this evening at school, once lessons have finished and we will brief you.We count on you, do not let us down!Sincerely,Det. Chemlock Holmes and César Watsonero

Mr Horace Cope, Scottish. Religion Teacher. People say that he did not have a very close relationship with the two murdered teachers, although they agree that they have always been together since around two or three months ago. Horace got to the school two years ago. From that moment on, he became inseparable with the other two teachers who were murdered. They went for coffee together, had lunch together an even went partying together (yes, teachers also like to party!). Six months ago, however, something happened and they stopped hanging out with each other. Why? Did anything nasty occur that made them split up?
Mrs Algha Rithem, shy, quiet and very strict. Maths teacher. She studied mathematics at Queen Mary University, in London, with one of the victims, Frida Fish. Her family were very close to the dead woman's family, but it is not known to what extent. Mrs Algha Rithem's dad worked for the killed lady's mother. Then, when Rithem's dad was about to retire, Fish's mom fired him without any further explanation. Was that a reason enough to kill Frida Fish? And if so...why kill Amalio Ortiga?
What does a young, pretty and well-loved teacher like Mrs Anne Chovee have to do with the victims? Apparently, nothing, but what if...? Two years ago, when Anne arrived at the school, everybody agreed that she was the prettiest and kindest teacher that could exist. And so did Amalio too. So much that people say that he fell in love with her. Was it true? The fact was that Amalio was not very popular for being kind to anyone, but with Anne, he behaved differently: he even smiled! (something that nobody had seen him do previously)Anne seemed happy with the way Amalio treated her and people started gossiping about them.At the same time, Frida looked sadder than ever and stopped talking to Amalio, according to some witnesses. Two months ago, however, Frida and Amalio became inseparable and Anne has never been seen with Amalio again. Was she perhaps jealous? Was this jealousy enough to kill two people?
Lida is one of the school's counsellors Her relationship with Amalio Ortiga and Frida Fish goes back to ten years ago, when they arrived at the school. They got on well with each other and were frequently seen together having coffee during school breaks.Amalio and Frida had never gone into her office to look for psychological advice, though. However, two months ago on a cold Friday morning, they suddenly went in there together and when they came out, Lida was seen wandering the school halls in distress and with a dark look on her face. What did they tell her? Is she hiding something?
Philosophy teacher. He's a bit absent-minded but also a terrific teacher: all his students love him. Justin Case is always asking his students questions about life and the origin of our species. They enjoy his lessons because he makes them think about life and also for one very special reason: Justin was a magnificent football player in the teachers' team! He always made the teachers' team win whenever they played against the students. I say he "was" a great player because in the last match that students and teachers played against each other, Amalio kicked him on the shin and broke his leg. Worse still, when this happened, Frida could not stop laughing! The doctors told him he would never play his favourite game again. Was this a reason enough to kill them both?
Mr Jack Uzzi is the school's handy man. He knew Frida and Amalio before they came to IES MARIA MOLINER, because he has always worked in other schools at the same time. Besides, he and his brother refurbished Frida's house some years ago, something he usually did to get some extra money in the evenings. They have never had a friendly relationship ever since. People believe it is because Frida took a long time to pay him for his service and when Jack got angry, she started spreading the rumour that the refurbishment had been a terrible mess.Jack lost many of his customers and much of the money he usually made after school. Could his thirst for revenge have pushed him to kill Frida? But then... why kill Amalio Ortiga too?

Amazing! You found a cassette tape!
Despite the bad sound quality, you believe you might discover who the criminal is, so you take a pen and pencil and sit down to listen to the tape. Play the cassette to know more.
Your aim right now is to take anyone who is not a suspect off your list of names. How can you get new clues??? Listen to the tape! To do this, you need to click on the right button and obtain new information about each of the suspects.
Write down the names of the suspects in your notepad. When you read each clue, you just have to click on the character's name that you want to discard from your list of suspects. Do so until there is only one name left! That will be the killer's name! Good luck!

Exactly! You found the killer out!!!!
Return to lab
Amalio Ortiga left a note under his desk and you find it out when nobody sees you… "Remember the number of people that you have had to rule out to find the culprit" Write down that number, you cannot forget it.

You are in the entry hall and you engage into looking for new evidence that the police may have ignored or clues that they did not find out...
to the lab
You found these documents behind one of the bins. They include papers with Frida and Amalio's handwriting! They were studying English together and it seems like they coded some information within some grammar and vocabulary exercises. Take a pen and pencil to guess the answers out!
At the end of every page there is a number. It might be a good idea to take that number down as part of the answer. Amalio was a lover of logic games and English and he may have anticipated his death. As a consequence, Amalio may have left you a combination of both things so as to help you solve his crime and that of Frida's. It may be a good idea to write everything down...
If we want to ask the question "you/visit/your parents/yesterday?" we need...
"Did"
Do and the 3rd person "s" in "visit"
We just need to turn "visit" into "visited".

RETRIEVE AMALIO'S DOCUMENTS
Segovia, 15th March 2021
go to project
Dear student,Amalio and Frida's co-workers have all been interrogated...and A. Rithem has been sentenced to life in prison. Apparently, Algha could not tolerate the fact that Frida's family fired her dad when he was just 1 year away from retirement. Her father had worked so hard for Frida's family that he could not cope with the shame and had a heart attack that killed him. Algha felt furious and killed Frida for that, but...Why kill Amalio? Well, it seems that he, dear student, was the one who forced Frida's family to fire the old man. They owed Amalio a lot of money and could not pay it back, so Amalio made them pay back with a personal favour, instead... He asked them to hire his own father to help in Frida's house, instead! Anyway, you did what we asked you and for that, we thank you. You'll know from us soon. In the meantime, please accept this €10,000 reward and click on the "go to project" button to know what you have to do with all this information so that your teachers, César and Chema, do not suspect anything from you.Kind regards,Chemlock Holmes and Dr. Watsonero.

breaking news! new murder in town!
As you probably know, 2 teachers were murdered last month at IES MARIA MOLINER, so we need your help for a project. In this unit's project, you will have to carry out 2 different assignments:1- A news report about the crime that took place at IES MARIA MOLINER. (individual assignment)2- A video/presentation where you and a classmate will perform an interrogatory session (a dialogue) between a detective and a suspect/witness.
How to write a news report!
Follow these rules to write the perfect article
You are going to become a journalist! You heard about what happened at María Moliner and you want to write about it. To write the perfect article, remember that you need to answer these questions:- WHEN did it happen? (Day of the week? daytime? night time? what was the weather like?, etc).- WHERE did it happen? (Describe the place with powerful adjectives)- WHO were involved in the situation? (describe the people who are the protagonists in your news story: refer to their physical appearance, their age, their job, etc.)- WHAT did exactly happen? (describe the facts as accurately as possible in a linear succession)- WHY and how did it happen?- WHAT are the consequences of what happened?
IMPORTANT: Click here!!!!
- Remember to use time expressions like:
- On + day.
- At first / first of all.
- Then/later/next; Finally.
- Furthermore/Besides.
- Nevertheless/However.
- And.
- Also.
- Too.
- But.
- Although.
- Despite this.
Welcome again, detective. I imagine that you are waiting for your video mission briefing...
GUIDELINES FOR THE PROJECT 1. VIDEO (The adjectives from this unit may be useful for you.) - With a classmate, record a video (2:30 minutes long, at least) where one of you will be a detective and the other one will be a witness to a crime (you can use the one in our Escape game, but as with the news article, originality will be rewarded). The video cannot start with you two speaking about the crime straight away, you must get to know each other and say your goodbyes in a polite manner at the end. - The detective's role:
- You must interrogate the witness and ask as many questions as possible.
- Obviously, your role cannot only restrict itself to asking questions and waiting for answers... You must start by describing the crime briefly and continue by commenting on the witness answers and give your opinion about them.
- Decide what to do with the witness at the end of the interrogation (is he/she a suspect? can he/she go home because he/she has nothing to do with the crime?, etc.).
- Answer the detective's questions as accurately and as describe everything you saw as precisely as possible.
- Your speaking time must be balanced with that of your classmate's. Neither of you can keep talking clearly more than the other. Otherwise, both of you will receive a negative grade; remember that this is a co-operative assignment.
