Anthony Johnson was the first free Afro-American.He bought his freedom and created the first free black community.
IN 1619 THE FIRST BLACK SLAVES WERE DEPORTED TO AMERICA FROM ANGOLA.THEY WERE SOLD IN JAMESTOWN,IN VIRGINIA.THEY WORKED ON TOBACCO, SUGAR AND COTTON PLANTATIONS, IN THE SOUTHER STATESTHE JOURNEY ON THE SHIP TO AMERICA WAS HARD AND MANY SLAVES DIED.

In 1775 Benjamin Franklin was the first president of the Pennsylvanian Society, that fought for the abolition of slavery in America.
Vermont was the first state to abolish slavery in 1777.

In 1865 Civil War ended and the UNION ( the Northern States) won it and slavery was abolished.
Between 1861and 1865 CIVIL WAR broke out between the South and the North because the Southern States or the “ Confederacy”supported slavery While the Northern States or the “Union” opposed slavery.
In 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe published her book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, the first novel against slavery. It’s about a slave killed by his master. In the same year ( 1852), an anti-slavery organization was created : the UNDERGROUND RAILWAY. It helped slaves to escape, crossing the border into Canada.
In 1890 segregation laws separated the Whites from the Blacks in public places and transport.
The National Urban League is established in New York City. The purpose of the NUL is to help Black Americans find jobs and housing. As the league describes on its website, its mission is: "To help African-Americans and others in underserved communities achieve their highest true social parity, economic self-reliance, power, and civil rights. The League promotes economic empowerment through education and job training, housing and community development, workforce development, entrepreneurship, health, and quality of life."The NUL will grow to 90 affiliates serving 300 communities in 37 states and the District of Columbia.

In 1956, a Black woman, named ROSA PARKS, was arrested because she didn’t give her bus seat to a white man on a bus, in Montgomery, Alabama.
In 1939 BILLIE HOLLIDAY, the great jazz and blues singer, recorded the song “ Strange Fruit”, about blacks lynched by the Ku Klux Klan ( a hate group against African- Americans, Jews and Immigrants) in the Southern States.
The Harlem Renaissance was a famous cultural movement in the 1920s. JAZZ and BLUES became really popular. LOUIS ARMSTRONG and DUKE ELLINGTON were famous jazz and blues musicians.
Martin Luther King was the leader of the black civil rights movement. Black civil activists, led by M. L. king, started a protest, after Rosa Parks’arrest; they boycotted all city buses and after one year the segregation laws on buses were abolished. In 1963, M. L. King led a big MARCH IN WASHINGTON.
In 1964 Martin Luther King won the Nobel Prize for Peace.

The black activis malcom X was assassinated.

Muammad Ali was banned from boxing.

IN 1968 Martin Luther King WAS ASSASSINATED.
Muhammad Ali, a champion boxer, refused to join the Vietnam War in 1967 and he was banned from boxing.
In 1965, the black activist Malcom X was assassinated. “ X “ represented the unknown African name of his ancestors.
IN 1969 THE ENTIRE MONTH OF FEBRUARY BECAME BLACK HISTORY MONTH AND WAS OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED IN 1975 BY PRESIDENT GERALD FORD.
In 1971 Ali became World Champion.
