Leonhard Paul Euler in German, in Spanish (Basel, Switzerland; April 15, 1707-Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire; September 18, 1783), known as Leonhard Euler , was a Swiss mathematician and physicist. He is the leading mathematician of the 18th century and one of the greatest and most prolific of all time, well known for the Euler number (e), a number that appears in many calculations and physics formulas. He lived in Saint Petersburg (Russia), and also in Berlin (Prussia) for most of his adult life and made important discoveries in areas as diverse as calculus or graph theory. He also introduced much of modern mathematical terminology and notation, particularly for the area of mathematical analysis, such as the notion of mathematical function.2 He is also known for his work in the fields of mechanics, optics, and the astronomy. Euler has been one of the most prolific mathematicians, and it is estimated that his collected complete works could span between 60 and 80 volumes.3 A statement attributed to Pierre Simon Laplace expresses the influence of Euler on later mathematicians: 'Read Euler, read Euler, he is the teacher of us all.
