1. Third Conditional
Index
Third Conditional
THIRD CONDITIONAL
It talks about an unreal past. We use it when talking about a past condition that was not attained, since the action in the if clause didn't happen. It is used to describe a situation that didn’t occured, and to imagine the possible result of this situation. If we switch the if clause and the main clause, the meaning is the same.if - clause past perfect---------------main clause would + have + past participleIf they had heard me, none of this would have happened.
Examples
If we hadn’t taken a taxi, we wouldn’t have missed the plane. She wouldn’t have been tired if she had gone to bed earlier. He would have become a teacher if he had gone to university. They would have been on time for the interview, if they had left the house at nine.
If he had tried to leave the country, he would have been stopped at the frontier. If she had studied, she would have passed the test. If I hadn’t eaten so much, I wouldn’t have felt sick.
If I hadn't missed the train, I wouldn't have been late for the meeting. If I had known that you were coming, I would have met you at the airport.
PRACTICE TIME
Variations
The form with conditionals can be a little different, you can use could ormight instead of would.if - clause past perfect---------------main clause could / might + have + pas participleIf she had used a sword, I might have been dead now
Examples
If we had the necessary documents, we could have left at once. (Permission)
If the rescue crew had found him earlier, they might have saved his life. (Possibility)
If the rescue crew had found him earlier, they could have saved his life. (Ability)
PRACTICE TIME
Variations
The continuous form of the perfect conditional may be also used.Examples: If I’d had any money, I would have been watching the filmWe can use the past perfect continuous in the if clause. Example: (I wasn't wearing a seat belt.) If I had been wearing one, I wouldn't have been seriously injured. PAST AND FUTURE If she hadn’t been taken to another country she would have been an excellent actress. If we had won the lottery last week, we would have bought a new sofa today.

Phrase of the day
Goose Bumps
Meaning/Usage: The literal tiny bumps you get all over your body when you are experiencing intense emotions.Explanation: In some countries, they call it chicken skin because the tiny bumps on the arm looks like chicken skin. But in the US, they use "goose bumps.""I was so touched by the movie that I started getting goose bumps all over my arms." "When she told me that she loved me, I got goose bumps." "I get goose bumps anytime I'm scared." "John told us a story and everyone got goose bumps."
